Sinister 2 (2015)

The original Sinister was a passable chiller, but the sequel feels more like a vague attempt to create a lucrative franchise than to create anything truly interesting or spooky. The first film had Ethan Hawke in an interesting role, as a struggling writer. Sinister 2 has only James Ransone as a likably flawed hero; even if his motives and background are not clear, he's brave and takes charge, but still vulnerable. The other characters are thinly written, including the villains. read more...

Solace (2016)

Though this supernatural thriller has a decent idea and a great cast, Solace can't seem to transcend its crushingly rudimentary, mediocre screenwriting and filmmaking techniques. It seems to want to raise questions about the quality of life; if one were able to predict a long period of pointless suffering in a human life, would it be humane to end that life before the suffering began? But the discussion never probes very deep, partly because the question is non-realistic in nature. read more...

Curse of the Demon (1957)

I was at my neighborhood video store when I noticed a used copy of Curse of the Demon on sale for $10. I picked it up, knowing that it was the chopped, 82 minute American version (it said so on the box). The British version of the movie runs 95 minutes, and is called Night of the Demon. (The title was changed for American audiences.) What the heck, though. It's a great movie nonetheless, and I'd been wanting to see it again. read more...

    Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)

Like all anthology films, this one -- based on Rod Serling's groundbreaking TV series (1959-64) -- has its high and low points, and not where you'd expect. Steven Spielberg's "Kick the Can" segment, with its unabashed sentimentality and odd character motivation, is unquestionably the weakest. John Landis' segment, about a bigot who learns firsthand about discrimination, is infamous for its on-set accident that killed lead actor Vic Morrow. But for all that, it's a fairly accomplished entry. read more...

      Dead Again (1991)

For his second feature after his celebrated Henry V, actor/director Kenneth Branagh chose this smart, original screenplay by Scott Frank, who would go on to an impressive career. A stylish, slick homage to film noir detective movies, it's set in two time periods, with the 1940s sequences shown in black-and-white, and the modern-day sequences shown in color. In the past, a woman (Emma Thompson) is murdered and her husband (Branagh) is accused of doing the deed. In the present, private eye Mike Church (Branagh) takes the case of trying to find the identity of a woman with amnesia (Thompson). We get some priceless missing jewels, deadly scissors, hypnotism, and Robin Williams in a great supporting part as a discredited psychiatrist. Andy Garcia co-stars in the 1940s sequences, and Derek Jacobi -- who had been in Henry V -- appears in the present-day sequences. Patrick Doyle's heightened score helps the mood immeasurably. read more...
