Insidious (2011)

Director James Wan and writer/actor Leigh Whannell team up for the third time after their hit Saw and its dull follow-up Dead Silence (Whannell appeared in, but did not write Wan's film Death Sentence). With Insidious, they have hit upon their best and most frightening film yet. Essentially, it's a retread of Poltergeist, about a haunted house that more or less "kidnaps" a child, but it has its own unique spin. It's an old tale told in a new way. read more...

Sinister (2012)

Writer/director Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Day the Earth Stood Still) has a touch for using old horror movie tools to create new scares, and he also incorporates several interesting themes into Sinister. Even if some of his attempts don't quite work some of the time, he still gets credit for trying. read more...

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Looking at Philip Kaufman's Invasion of the Body Snatchers once more, I became convinced that it's not only the best of the four films based on Jack Finney's story, but also one of the best films of the 1970s. (It may also be the greatest film shot entirely in San Francisco.) The film begins with a deliberately organic version of an alien invasion, with flowers, spores and pods making their way silently, unnoticed, to earth. read more...

King Kong (1933)

"I'm going out and make the greatest picture in the world -- something that no one's ever seen or heard!" When Carl Denham (Robert Armstrong) speaks these words near the beginning of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's King Kong, we somehow know that he's referring to the picture we're watching right now. Even today, looking at this nearly 80 year-old film brings with it a sense of wonder and astonishment, as if all the special effects spectacles that came after it never existed. read more...

Village of the Damned (1995)

It's hard to argue that John Carpenter's remake of Village of the Damned is better than the 1960 original, or even good, but it's filled with so many clever, satisfying moments, it's worth a viewing, especially if, like some of us, you consider Carpenter to be an American master. read more...
