Clue (1985)

In April of 2019, I had good fortune of seeing Jonathan Lynn's Clue (1985) on the big screen at the Alamo Drafthouse with my girlfriend. It was my second time, and her umpteenth; she showed it to me previously on DVD. It was a flop upon its initial release. Of all things, it was based on a board game, which not only seemed like a terrible idea, but a terrible idea long before such terrible ideas became commonplace. I skipped it in the theater and on video, mainly because Siskel & Ebert's review dissuaded me. The film's gimmick, three different endings that could be viewed at different times for different outcomes, proved illogical for them. Many others were dissuaded as well. But years later, it has become a cult classic, perhaps thanks to the strange and funny juxtaposition of the elegant and the ridiculous, buttoned-up and dressed-to-the-nines grown ups reading such silly lines and performing such silly slapstick. read more...

Looney Tunes: Musical Masterpieces (2015)

Growing up and heading out into the world, I realized that I had learned some of the world's great pieces of music from the Looney Tunes cartoons. (There was a reason they were called "Tunes.") Indeed, even when they featured original music (by the incomparable Carl Stalling), these cartoons were at their most creative when they focused on music as a theme or subject (many of these shorts, aside from singing, relied on pure visuals to tell their stories). So this collection of 18 music-related cartoons was a brilliant idea, and it showcases some of the finest work the Warner team ever did. read more...

Airplane! (1980)

Their brilliant comedy is so totally in check that it almost plays like a straightforward drama; and indeed, quite a bit less hysterical than the airplane disaster movies it spoofs. It has inspired countless knock-offs, notably the use of background nonsense while the foreground is played straight. But, ironically, not a single film made in the 25 years since has captured its same brand of stone-faced hilarity. read more...

The Bad News Bears (1976)

In the original The Bad News Bears, Walter Matthau stars as Morris Buttermaker, who becomes the unwitting coach of a team of misfits and outcasts (fat kids, nearsighted kids, Mexican kids, Jewish kids, foul-mouthed kids, etc.). He recruits a girl, Amanda Whurlizer (Tatum O'Neal), for a pitcher, and a unwieldy motorcycle punk Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley), who both significantly improve the team's chances of winning. It suddenly occurred to me halfway through this that I was watching a W.C. Fields movie. Matthau was the perfect Fields for the modern age. He's a beer-swilling, grumbling curmudgeon who, when faced with the kids, develops a look on his face as if a dog just piddled on his best polyester suit. It's not long before the "David vs. Goliath" formula kicks in, but Matthau's perfectly restrained, brilliantly comic performance holds it together. read more...
