Silence (2016)

This religious epic, a dream project of director Martin Scorsese that has gestated for decades, has emerged somewhat difficult and unwieldy, a bit gory, but also magnificent, beautiful, and masterful. Scorsese read the novel by Shusaku Endo while in Japan in 1989 and has tried for years to visualize it for the screen; it's impossible to guess if the results ever could have been any better than they are now. Silence is a mix of Hollywood grandeur and genuine existential, soul-searching, much like the films Scorsese grew up watching. read more...

Maborosi (1995)

This feature debut by Hirokazu Kore-eda highlights his appreciation for Yasujiro Ozu, which has its plusses and minuses. Though Maborosi is assured in its every frame, it still feels as if Kore-eda were a little unsure, a little unformed, and leaning a little too hard on ideas borrowed from Ozu to brace himself. But at the same time, how many other filmmakers have ever come even remotely this close to replicating that special Ozu touch? To be sure, for viewers that know and love Ozu's work, Maborosi is a pure pleasure to watch. In it, Kore-eda begins his mature explorations of death and family, and he is even able to go a little farther than Ozu with is inclusion of sex as a factor. read more...

    A Quiet Passion (2017)

Written and directed by Terence Davies, A Quiet Passion tells the story of Emily Dickinson, who is regularly considered among the ten best poets of all time. It's a step above many biopics, more sophisticated and less commercial. It's rigorous and austere, and often difficult, as when Emily fights and panics through her agony and seizures due to Bright's disease. It's also extraordinarily articulate, to the point that it frequently sounds more like writing than talking. But for all that it's a quite rewarding experience, with Davies's sophisticated, gentle touch guiding the film throughout. Best of all is Cynthia Nixon in the lead role; she's best known for playing Miranda on Sex in the City, but it seems like she's far more at home in the 19th century than in the 21st. She's incredible. read more...
