The Last Emperor (1987)

I saw The Last Emperor the week it opened in 1987, and haven't seen it since. Now, 11 years later, the movie is being re-released, in a "director's cut," supervised by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, with almost an hour of footage restored. The 11 years in-between viewings of The Last Emperor has dulled my memory, and I wasn't able, for the most part, to distinguish which scenes were new. read more...

Silence (2016)

This religious epic, a dream project of director Martin Scorsese that has gestated for decades, has emerged somewhat difficult and unwieldy, a bit gory, but also magnificent, beautiful, and masterful. Scorsese read the novel by Shusaku Endo while in Japan in 1989 and has tried for years to visualize it for the screen; it's impossible to guess if the results ever could have been any better than they are now. Silence is a mix of Hollywood grandeur and genuine existential, soul-searching, much like the films Scorsese grew up watching. read more...

Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003)

If anyone has the face of a modern woman, Scarlett Johansson does. When we think of her in her two best roles so far, as Rebecca in Ghost World and as Charlotte in Lost in Translation, we see the ultimate 21st century girl. Her throaty voice, her pouty lips and the world-weariness and uncertainty behind her eyes scream contemporary. She's as part of her time as Brigitte Bardot or Jane Fonda were of theirs. read more...

    Avalon (1990)

The third in Barry Levinson's "Baltimore" series, Avalon is a sweet, sentimental trip through time, focusing on routines as well as on bumps in the road, and smoothly coated in Allen Daviau's lush, Oscar-nominated cinematography. It begins as Sam Krichinsky comes to America in 1914, a refrain heard many times, on the Fourth of July, wandering the streets lit up by fireworks. (He's wonderfully played by Armin Mueller-Stahl in the present day.) He joins his four brothers and they begin to raise their families in the new world. There's a Thanksgiving ritual in which one brother is always late, and one year he is a bit too late, which starts a small feud ("You cut the toikey witout me?"). Older cousins Jules (Aidan Quinn) and Izzy (Kevin Pollak) attempt to capture the American dream by opening a department store; they also get in trouble for shortening their last names. Television becomes a driving influence in the slow disintegration of the family unit. Little Elijah Wood would have been about 8 or 9 while making this, playing Jules' son, stung by bees. The overall effect is warm, sweet, and sad, all at once. Other Oscar nominations included Best Screenplay, Best Score (Randy Newman), and Best Costume Design. read more...
