Shanghai Noon (2000)

I'm pleased to report that Shanghai Noon is the best Jackie Chan movie in many moons. In his second Hollywood film Chan teams up with Owen Wilson, the charming, cleverly slow-witted, drawling actor who graced Bottle Rocket (1996), Anaconda (1997), and The Haunting (1999) and co-wrote the screenplays for Bottle Rocket and the brilliant Rushmore (1998). Wilson makes a much better partner for Chan than Chris Tucker did in the annoying Rush Hour (1998), in which Tucker spent the entire movie trying to upstage Chan while the script creaked along behind them. read more...

Identity Thief (2013)

It only makes sense that she would be promoted to leading roles, which could be a mistake. What if she's better as a character actress? What if the entire movie is a joke about her weight and appearance? read more...

Spy (2015)

Melissa McCarthy earned an Oscar nomination for her work in Paul Feig's Bridesmaids, and now she teams with Feig for the third time in Spy. Once again she shows that she is one of out great comic performers, although, given her ill-considered movies Identity Thief, The Hangover Part III, and Tammy, perhaps it's more likely that she and Feig together are one of the great director-actor teams (who else knows how to put her to good use?). Either way, she gets a juicy role in Spy as Susan Cooper, and she makes the most of it. She's absolutely lovable, starting off with an array of hurt and doubt and then moving up to well-earned self confidence. read more...

The Other Guys (2010)

Will Ferrell has developed a perfect comic persona for himself. It's not unlike Charlie Chaplin's "tramp" persona, with all its various juxtapositions and conflicts -- the tight little jacket and baggy pants, for example -- causing comedy at every step. Ferrell presents his big, man's frame and fills it in with girlish behavior (occasionally a role requires boyish behavior, but it's better, as in his biggest success Elf, when it's girlish). Here he wears big glasses and a tight shock of curly hair, with tired-looking beige clothes. Throughout The Other Guys, Ferrell's sidekick Mark Wahlberg throws at him any number of emasculating remarks. His car is "like driving a vagina," or his urine hitting the porcelain "sounds feminine." But Ferrell never blinks, never flinches, because this is what's so funny. read more...

National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)

National Lampoon's Vacation boasts a great cast and great lines from start to finish, but the funniest moments in this film for me invariably come from Randy Quaid, who plays Chevy Chase's dumb country cousin. Some choice bits: "Hey, I bet you could use a cool one!" (Quaid hands Chase a half-drunk beer and opens a new one for himself) or regarding his mute daughter, "She was born without a tongue, Clark, but don't you worry about her! She whistles like a bird and eats like a horse!" read more...
