Bastards (2013)

The great French director Claire Denis has never been much for plots. She's more about mood, atmosphere, as well as focusing on the relationship between her characters and their environments. So it's an intriguing idea that she should take on a "film noir" type story, a genre that relies both on mood and on plot. The result does not necessarily rank with her greatest work, though it is certainly intriguing. read more...

Lady Macbeth (2017)

A blurb on the DVD box cover suggests something about Hitchcock directing Wuthering Heights, but it seems to me that Lady Macbeth is closer to Herschell Gordon Lewis directing Wuthering Heights. This movie is messed up, and far more interesting than the standard costume movie stuff. read more...

    Nymphomaniac: Volume II (2014)

At the end of Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac: Volume I, it appeared as if he were at last going to be kind to his protagonist, or at least show her some understanding. Now Nymphomaniac: Volume II is here, completing von Trier's four-hour-plus film, and things have gone back to normal. It almost makes me wonder if von Trier usually does this during the course of a single movie, but here, with a long break in the middle, his methods become painfully clear. read more...

    Bitter Moon (1992)

Bitter Moon (1992) is one of director Roman Polanski's most underrated pictures, and a bit atypical, since it deals with the psychological balance between four people instead of just one. Normal British couple Hugh Grant and Kristin Scott Thomas are enjoying a quiet sea cruise together when American writer Peter Coyote begins worming in on their lives, telling Grant the story of his topsy-turvy relationship with the gorgeous French waitress Emmanuelle Seigner. It begins sweetly, but turns dark and violent and manipulative. Polanski tempers his tale by filtering it through Grant, who receives it with a combination of disgust and fascination. The film was not released in American theaters until 1994. read more...

    Venus in Fur (2014)

Throughout his entire career, from his feature debut Knife in the Water (1962) to the recent Carnage (2011), director Roman Polanski has specialized in wringing psychological tension from just a few characters (or one character) who are stuck and coming to pieces within limited spaces. In Venus in Fur, that place happens to be in the theater, and because it's based on a play by David Ives, some viewers may find it too stagy or stagebound. However, Polanski does not use the theater setting like a stage, and Venus in Fur moves very much like a movie, and a highly skilled one. read more...
