Paddington 2 (2018)

Paul King's Paddington (2015) was so surprisingly wonderful and such an unlikely hit that it seemed nearly impossible for a sequel to be any good. Yet Paddington 2 currently holds a Rotten Tomatoes record, with a perfect 100% rating based on 172 reviews. (Now it will be 173; in full confession, my son and I skipped the press screening of Paddington 2 and we only caught up with it later after we saw the reviews.) read more...

Shaun the Sheep Movie (2015)

Aardman's Shaun the Sheep Movie is a miraculous thing. It's an animated movie that embraces true physical humor, as the likes of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton once did. It is, in essence, a silent movie, with no spoken words. Characters grunt and mumble and make verbal noises, and these noises often indicate intent or emotion, and there are a few pop songs, but not one actual word is spoken. read more...

Paddington (2015)

First appearing in 1958, Paddington Bear is a creature of kindness and politeness, far from the wisecracking, marketable children's characters of today. Yet, somehow the new Paddington movie seems modern while at the same time holding firmly to its quaint, lovely ideals. Ben Whishaw voices the CGI bear, who is raised in darkest Peru under the indirect influence of an English explorer; he loves marmalade. He travels to London and finds a place to stay with the Browns (Hugh Bonneville and a delightful Sally Hawkins) and their children, Judy and Jonathan. Villains can often kill the mood in a children's film, but here it's Nicole Kidman as a driven taxidermist, and she makes the role worthwhile. Director and co-writer Paul King includes a few big slapstick moments, but they arise naturally out of the character's unfamiliarity with the civilized world, and only one brief burp/fart joke enters the proceedings. Perhaps the real appeal of this movie is that good manners never go out of style. read more...

The Sandlot (1993)

The largely family-friendly The Sandlot (1993) tells a story of the summer of 1962, when smart kid Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) moves to town, has no friends, and has no idea how to play baseball. The skilled, older "Benny" (Mike Vitar) lets him join their sandlot team anyway; these nine kids simply play ball, all day long, without ever keeping score. But if anything gets hit over the fence, it's gone forever, thanks to a mean, monster-sized junkyard dog. Of course, Scotty manages to hit his stepfather's autographed Babe Ruth ball into dog territory. read more...

Minions (2015)

It was a good idea to make spinoff films of Puss in Boots (2011) and Penguins of Madagascar (2014), because those characters were the only funny things in the Shrek and Madagascar movies. But this is not the case with the Minions in the terrific Despicable Me movies. Funny stuff is happening everywhere in those movies, and the Minions are sort of left to their own devices, doing silly little things in the midst of the bigger picture. Making them the big picture and giving them their own story stretches things a little thin, and Minions only sporadically works. It traces their existence on earth since the beginning of time, always looking for an evil master to serve. (This idea alone is pretty weak.) By the 1960s, they are living in a cave and have lost sight of their goal, until Stuart, Kevin and Bob go looking for a new boss. Their travels take them to a villain convention in Florida, where they meet Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). She agrees to give them the job if they'll steal the Queen of England's crown. Weirdly, Bob manages to pull the sword from the legendary stone and becomes king himself. The humor here feels forced, and not even Bullock seems to settle on just how to play the villainous Scarlet. But the animation is solid, and there are a couple of giggles here and there. Despite the shaky foundation for the movie, Minions paid off well, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. read more...
