Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Watching the new trailers for Tim Burton's upcoming Planet of the Apes, Icouldn't help noticing the lack of Johnny Depp. I suppose I've grownaccustomed to Depp and Burton working together. They seem to bring outthe best in each other. Depp is a shy, Brando-esque actor who loves tocompletely hide himself within a role, and the more there is to hide in,the better. Burton -- even more so than Spielberg -- has a finger perpetuallystuck into childhood dreams, fantasies, and fairy tales, and manages tobring about his own personal vision in an increasingly impersonal moviebusiness. When Burton works with Depp, the actor will go the limits tomine the director's nightmares and bring them to light. read more...

The Phantom of the Opera (2004)

If you need to adapt a huge Broadway spectacle to the screen, who better to do it than Joel Schumacher, the man forever infamous for putting nipples on Batman? And in truth, Schumacher does a remarkable job navigating the film's tremendous sets, floating his camera through rafters and around pillars with great energy. Yet, we have the play itself to deal with, a work based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, but plagued by Andrew Lloyd Weber's hideous and already dated musical score (parts of it sound like 1980s hair metal). In addition, we have a pretty-faced, pretty-voiced cast who can't seem to muster one complete personality between them. read more...

Only Lovers Left Alive (2014)

In my book, Jim Jarmusch can be ranked among the greatest living filmmakers. He has only made eleven feature films in a career of 30 years, but he has always worked independently and always remained true to his vision. Regardless of how they work as a whole, not one of those films has one moment that rings false or feels impersonal. read more...

Open Your Eyes (1997)

Ladies' man Cesar (Eduardo Noriega) leaves his casual sex partner for Sofia (Penelope Cruz), for whom he begins to feel his first feelings of true love. But his ex drives him off a cliff, seriously disfiguring his face. He wears a spooky mask and begins to hallucinate, until it's no longer clear what's real and what's not. Made in 1997, Open Your Eyes is an amazing thriller that generates genuine dread, suspense, and a dark, nightmarish quality. When the twisted plot is finally cleared up at the end, it's explained quickly and cleanly. It instantly became one of Spain's highest grossing films. But its American distributor, Artisan, seriously botched both the 1999 American theatrical release and the subsequent video release and hardly anyone saw it -- except for Cameron Crowe and Tom Cruise, who engineered the dumber American remake, Vanilla Sky. read more...
