The House I Live In (2012)

Noted documentary filmmaker Eugene Jarecki, brother of filmmakers Andrew (Capturing the Friedmans) and Nicholas (Arbitrage), goes about his bold The House I Live In in just the right way. He begins it with a personal touch, an interview with his family's former housekeeper, Nannie Jeter (that's her real name). Her responses inspire Jarecki to look further into the "War on Drugs," its history, and its long-term damaging effects on the United States. read more...

Lessons of Darkness (1992)

One of the great documentaries of the 1990s serendipitously returned to the 2000 San Francisco International Film Festival, finally giving me a chance to see it. The movie is Lessons of Darkness (1992), and it's directed by Werner Herzog, who was a member of the German New Wave, along with Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Wim Wenders, and it's arguably his best film since perhaps Fitzcarraldo (1982) or even Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972). read more...

This Is Not a Film (2012)

But lo and behold, here is a new film by Panahi, more or less. It was recorded on video over the course of one day -- at some point in 2010 -- with the help of co-director Mojtaba Mirtahmasb (who was an assistant on many of Mohsen Makhmalbaf's films). As it begins, Panahi is under house arrest and awaiting the outcome of his appeal on his sentence. He eats breakfast, talks to his lawyer on the phone, and then decides to read out loud from a script he had been hoping to make. read more...

The Dissident (2021)

Long, and not exactly uplifting, the documentary The Dissident is nevertheless absolutely essential, constantly re-asserting its own investigative journalism even in the face of world powers that would crush it. read more...

Masculin Féminin (1966)

French New Wave icon Jean-Pierre Leaud was best known as the sullen romantic Antoine Doniel in Francois Truffaut's five-film cycle. In Masculin FĂ©minin, he stars as the other half of his persona for director Jean-Luc Godard. Ostensibly, the film traces the relationship between left-wing rebel Paul (Leaud) and pop singer Madeleine (Chantal Goya). But as always, Godard uses the story to hang a myriad of sociopolitical ideas and pop culture references upon. read more...
