The Last Hurrah (1958)

John Ford seemed to have been at the height of his powers when he took on this adaptation of Edwin O'Connor's novel. The result feels effortless, not at all preachy about politics, but at the same time timeless (the more things change, the more they stay the same). Spencer Tracy, working with Ford for the first time in 28 years, likewise gives a relaxed, commanding performance as Frank Skeffington, the mayor of a New England city, who decides to run for a fifth term. Frank believes in old-fashioned campaigning, i.e. shaking hands and actually speaking to his constituents, although he's aware that a new kind of politics has arrived and that he might not be able to compete. read more...

    The Last Laugh (1924)

F.W. Murnau's The Last Laugh stars the irrepressible Emil Jannings, at the time considered perhaps the finest of all screen actors. He plays an aging hotel doorman, dressed in an elegant head-to-toe uniform, complete with white gloves and dotted with shiny buttons. His uniform is a source of great pride as he walks to and from work each day; his neighbors fawn over him. One night, during a downpour, he is unable to lift a heavy chest and his boss transfers him to a downstairs washroom attendant job. Stripped of his uniform, he also loses his pride and dignity. (Jannings' body leans in a twisted, physical representation of shame; he's literally unable to stand up straight.) read more...

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)

William Wyler's post-WWII prestige project tapped into the social consciousness so effectively that it made lots of money as well as becoming an Oscar juggernaut (it won 7 Oscars out of 8 nominations, plus one honorary award). Mainstream critics not only proclaimed it a masterpiece, but also proclaimed it one of the greatest films ever made, a claim that sticks to this day. James Agee expressed his admiration for it, but also dismantled its many flaws, whereas Manny Farber famously called it "a horse-drawn truckload of liberal schmaltz." read more...

    Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

Whether or not the courtroom details are accurate, Anatomy of a Murder has got a hell of a story. It was based on a popular book of a true case, by Robert Traver (a.k.a. Judge John D. Voelker), and Preminger had the iron guts enough to not make it sensationalist or sentimental. He just made a cold, hard movie. It goes on for two hours and forty minutes because it needs to, and that time feels just right. James Stewart, in unquestionably one of his greatest performances, stars as the fisherman lawyer who unexpectedly gets called for the big murder case. A soldier's wife (Lee Remick) is raped, and her husband (Ben Gazzara) is charged with murdering the rapist. George C. Scott, in one of his first roles, plays the prosecutor. Joseph Welch, a real-life judge, gives a marvelous performance as (what else?) the judge. read more...
