    Rancho Notorious (1952)

Pauline Kael predicted that this 1952 effort would not be among the films Fritz Lang would be remembered for. Fortunately, she was wrong. At first glance it seems like a silly, stagy Western, but Lang managed to use the film's shortcomings to his advantage. read more...

      The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

Some cinephiles hold Clint Eastwood's Civil War-era Western The Outlaw Josey Wales in equal esteem to Eastwood's Unforgiven, and some even prefer it. It's a powerful, revisionist, revenge Western with many unique touches, but it gets a bit cutesy in its second half as stoic Josey Wales (Eastwood) teams up with a band of quasi-comic misfits to fight the final battle. read more...

Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)

Clint Eastwood stars in Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970), his second of five films for director Don Siegel. He plays a stoic cowboy much like his "man with no name" character from the Sergio Leone spaghetti Westerns who happens upon a group of miscreants attacking a nun (Shirley MacLaine) and reluctantly agrees to help her escape from the Mexican army. Much like The African Queen, the mismatched couple bicker and eventually fall in love, united by a common goal -- in this case a cache of gold. Siegel shoots in beautiful widescreen and keeps the action scrappy and pulpy, just like his best "B" movies. The movie boasts a story by Budd Boetticher, a score by Ennio Morricone, and cinematography by the great Gabriel Figueroa. read more...

      El Dorado (1967)

The year 1967 was a strange crossover time in American film. Directors like Howard Hawks had been canonized by the French "auteur" theory, and critics-turned filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut and Peter Bogdanovich were freely citing Hawks as an influence. At the same time, younger moviegoers were becoming attracted to new, hip cinema like Blow Up, Bonnie and Clyde and The Graduate, and Hawks and John Wayne were considered fogeys, way past their prime. When El Dorado was released, half the public was celebrating and hero worshipping, and the other half was sneering. read more...

        The Mark of Zorro (1940)

Rouben Mamoulian's studio-era production of the famed adventure classic feels a bit rigid and talky compared to the more rambunctious Douglas Fairbanks version (1920) and the sexier Antonio Banderas version (1998). But with Tyrone Power in the lead, it still finds room for bright, playful fun and some elegant sword fighting. Kino Lorber issued it on Blu-ray in 2016. It comes with the same audio commentary track, by film critic Richard Schickel, and the same A&E "Biography" episode (Tyrone Power) that were featured on the 2003 disc. This disc also includes trailers. read more...
