The Hornet's Nest (2014)

Mike Boettcher has been a war correspondent for decades, most frequently embedded in Iraq and Afghanistan. During this time, he has missed out on much of his home life, and missed seeing his son growing up. Heading off on his latest assignment, his grown son Carlos demands to come along, and Mike sees it as an opportunity to at last bond with him. But their destination includes some of the deadliest spots in Afghanistan, more or less right in the Taliban's own backyard. In this documentary, both men witness death and courage like they have never seen before, and both discover something new about themselves. read more...

Nanook of the North (1922)

Robert J. Flaherty is the father of the documentary for many reasons. The first is because he approached his subject with curiosity, following the stories that already existed, rather than imposing his own story upon his subjects. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Flaherty realized that there was no such thing as a completely objective documentary. As soon as a camera was introduced into any situation, the natural flow of things changed. So not only did Flaherty embrace this idea, he celebrated it, bringing his own personality into his films. read more...

Happy People: A Year in the Taiga (2013)

After acclaimed filmmaker Werner Herzog discovered four hours of footage about hunter/trappers in the remote Siberian Taiga region, he decided, with the blessing of the original director Dmitry Vasyukov, to edit his own, feature-length version, using his own narration. Using skills and tools passed down through the generations, the trappers prepare all year long for the frozen winter and the lonely job of catching enough game in the woods to survive. We witness as these amazing individuals make their own skis and build safe and secure shelters. Perhaps even more amazing are the hunting dogs, fierce, dedicated, and unbelievably brave. read more...

Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. (2018)

Like the Oscar-winning Amy Winehouse documentary Amy, Steve Loveridge's Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. contains tons of video footage of its subject, pop star M.I.A., from almost her entire life. So we see young Maya at art school, visiting her grandmother in Sri Lanka, and tapping out beats for what would become her first songs. Born the daughter of Arular Pragasam, the originator of the Tamil Tigers, she grew up with rebelliousness in her blood, and danger at her front door. Watching this film, it makes absolute sense that, in celebrity interviews, she would want to talk about genocide in her home country, rather than Hollywood gossip. Without wasting too much time, the movie details her meteoric rise to fame, and creating songs that actually meant something to her and came from her own experience, as well as her penchant for getting into trouble (mostly extending her middle finger during a Super Bowl performance and sending the world into a tizzy). It doesn't linger over any tragedies and always shows its spunky star bouncing back, ready for another round. The movie is probably already too far in her court to win over any new fans, but if you're an old fan, you'll thoroughly enjoy the blunt, brisk energy here. read more...

Public Enemy: It Takes a Nation - The First London Tour 1987 (2005)

If you listen to the first few minutes of Public Enemy's immortal album It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back (1988) -- now considered by many critics to be the greatest album of the 1980s -- you'll hear the opening moments of what sounds like an amazing concert. A British fellow gets on stage and introduces this legendary New York rap group, a siren kicks in, followed by hammering beats and warlike cries to "crank this shit up and get busy." Now fans can see that concert on MVD's extraordinary new DVD, but instead of fading out, as it does on the album, the concert keeps going, with Chuck D, Flavor Flav, Terminator X, Professor Griff and the others pounding through classics like "Countdown to Armageddon," "Bring the Noise," "Rightstarter" and "Rebel Without a Pause." read more...
