Airplane! (1980)

Their brilliant comedy is so totally in check that it almost plays like a straightforward drama; and indeed, quite a bit less hysterical than the airplane disaster movies it spoofs. It has inspired countless knock-offs, notably the use of background nonsense while the foreground is played straight. But, ironically, not a single film made in the 25 years since has captured its same brand of stone-faced hilarity. read more...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

John Hughes' four-film high school cycle somehow corresponded with my four years of high school. Sixteen Candles (1984) opened in the summer before my freshman year, and focused on freshmen. The Breakfast Club (1985) came in the spring of my sophomore year, followed by Weird Science (1985) in the summer before my junior year, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986) -- about three seniors -- in the summer before my senior year. (After I graduated, Hughes moved onto things like Curly Sue and Home Alone.) read more...

Popeye the Sailor 1933-1938 Volume 1 (2007)

During the silent era and in the 1930s, the Fleischer brothers, Max and Dave, gave Walt Disney a run for his money with their innovative "Out of the Inkwell" series (with Koko the Clown) and their twisted, surreal Betty Boop cartoons. The Popeye cartoons, notably the double-length, full-color extravaganzas Popeye the Sailor Meets Sindbad the Sailor (1936) and Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves (1937) easily stack up against Disney's more celebrated efforts of the same period (The Old Mill, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, etc.). read more...

Johnny Dangerously (1984)

I love this oddball period gangster spoof, directed by Amy Heckerling, with Michael Keaton at his cockiest, snappiest, and coolest as the title gangster who tries to support his ma (Maureen Stapleton) and tries to keep his kid brother (Griffin Dunne) on the straight and narrow. The setting is decidedly non-realistic -- it doesn't take place in any kind of reality, or in any kind of gangster film you've ever seen before -- and the jokes range from deadpan visuals to clever wordplay to irreverently dumb, repeated jokes that escalate with each telling. Joe Piscopo is also funny as the snide gun nut Vermin. But the villain Roman Troy Moronie, played by Richard Dimitri, gets the biggest laughs with his fractured curses, like "you fargin bastages!" The movie did not perform well either with audiences or critics, but it has its passionate fans today. "Weird Al" Yankovic provided a ragtime-style theme song, "This Is the Life," that fit perfectly, but was eventually deleted from home video releases for legal reasons. read more...

Get Shorty (1995)

Adapted by Scott Frank and directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, Get Shorty was considered at the time to be the first proper Elmore Leonard film adaptation, the first to get his brand of humor and his tone right. It's easily digested and quickly forgotten but, while watching, it has a strong and unique flavor. It's not an official masterpiece, but like Casablanca, it's a virtually flawless product of the Hollywood machine. read more...
