Octopussy (1983)

Octopussy is the thirteenth official James Bond film (an unofficial one, Never Say Never Again, was released the same year). Roger Moore appears in his sixth of seven outings as Agent 007. It's one of the sillier outings. John Glen directed, and he was already growing lazy. The movie indulges Moore's taste for ridiculous humor, which might have been fine, except that the movie bungles the more serious aspects of the story. The movie runs awfully long, but the timing is all off. Things seem rushed and clipped when they should have been more exploratory and suspenseful. read more...

    Live and Let Die (1973)

Making his debut as James Bond, Roger Moore was gentler and more reserved than his predecessor Sean Connery, and was certainly more prone to bits of deadpan comedy. His first movie is a mixed bag. It has a strong villain in Yaphet Kotto, but Jane Seymour as the main Bond girl is perhaps a bit too helpless and passive. Secondary Bond girl, African-American Gloria Hendry, became Bond's first interracial romance. read more...

      Joe Kidd (1972)

To date, Clint Eastwood has made only ten Westerns, and some of them are exemplary entries in the genre. So though Joe Kidd doesn't really stack up to films like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly or Unforgiven, it's still a prime example of a good, sturdy bread-and-butter Western. read more...

      Woman They Almost Lynched (1953)

Allan Dwan had an immense career; according to Peter Bogdanovich, he may have worked on nearly 1000 films between 1911 and 1961, and definitely directed more than 400 of them. Most of them were two-reelers in the silent era. He made expensive adventures with Douglas Fairbanks and cheap Westerns with Ronald Reagan. He made John Wayne war movies and Bela Lugosi thrillers. He made Shirley Temple movies for kids and Barbara Stanwyck movies for grown ups. He made screwball comedies, Westerns, adventures, crime stories, and just about everything else. The few film scholars who dared to scale the mountain of his work have usually given up. read more...
