Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)

Pierce Brosnan's second appearance as James Bond didn't have very many supporters when it opened -- the same day as Titanic -- but I was one of them. I found the movie's bad guy, Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) a sinister media baron hoping to take over the world using his media empire, quite clever and eerily prophetic. I was also a big fan of the casting of Hong Kong martial arts expert Michelle Yeoh as a Bond girl (even if her skills were not put to maximum use), as well as gorgeous Teri Hatcher (from TV's "Lois and Clark") as the slightly less savory Bond girl. read more...

Dr. No (1962)

The first James Bond movie is still one of the best, and shortest, of the series. Many of the series hallmarks had yet to be established, but it's still plenty satisfying. It's based on Ian Fleming's sixth novel, published in 1958. Sean Connery stars as Agent 007, dispatched to Jamaica to investigate the death of a fellow agent. read more...

Licence to Kill (1989)

The second of two Timothy Dalton James Bond movies, Licence to Kill has a good reputation for its attempt to "go darker." It was the first PG-13 rated movie of the series, and the first time Bond acts on his own after being suspended. It contains a bit more swearing and blood as well. But these superficial touches don't necessarily make a darker or better Bond movie. read more...

Lucy (2014)

Luc Besson's Lucy continues a happy trend this summer. Rather than brain-dead battle movies (like Transformers: Age of Extinction), many sci-fi movies have achieved a balanced combination of thoughtful or clever ideas and exhilarating action, one feeding into the other. read more...
