Spectre (2015)

There's a lot of talk, in the official 24th James Bond 007 film Spectre, about how Bond is no longer relevant for our times. And it seems as if quite a lot of critics have taken that idea and run with it in their reviews. Despite the fact that Spectre is one of the better films in the series, the general consensus seems to be saying that it's a bore. Don't listen to them. Sure, it's no Casino Royale (2006) or Skyfall (2012), but if you're a Bond fan, you'll love it. read more...

Code of Silence (1985)

In the 1980s, there were action movies aplenty, and even though Chuck Norris was one of the five biggest punching-and-kicking stars, no one really took his movies very seriously. That is, until Code of Silence came along, and Siskel & Ebert surprisingly gave it "two thumbs up" on their review show. It's still a Chuck Norris movie, of course, but it focuses on strong characters, interesting situations, and an appealingly gritty, urban realism. read more...

The Transporter (2002)

An entertaining surprise, Corey Yuen's The Transporter doesn't have any large issues at stake: just fast, clean fun. Jason Statham, with his growling British-twinged whisper, stars as a freelance secret agent available to transport people or objects from one place to another. This time, it's both: his package starts to move, and it turns out to be the sexy Shu Qi (Millennium Mambo, So Close). All kinds of trouble follows. read more...

Goldfinger (1964)

For many fans, the third film, Guy Hamilton's Goldfinger (1964), was the pinnacle of the series, wherein every element clicked into place with satisfying perfection. Bond (Connery) must stop the title bad guy (Gert Fröbe) from robbing Fort Knox. He meets the ultimate Bond girl, Pussy Galore (Honor Blackman), and the ultimate evil henchman, Oddjob (Harold Sakata), with his deadly hat. The dead girl, suffocated and covered in gold paint, is one of the indelible images of the entire series. This movie features some of the best lines ("I must be dreaming" and "No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!") as well as one of the very best songs, Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger." It won an Oscar for Best Sound Effects. read more...

For Your Eyes Only (1981)

Like Connery, Roger Moore also played agent 007 seven times, and though he is far less beloved than his predecessor, some fans appreciate him for his lighter, less aloof approach. Certain of Moore's movies are among the worst in the series, but others, like For Your Eyes Only (1981), are loads of fun. In this one, Bond is charged with recovering a lost communication device before it falls into the wrong hands, specifically the villainous Kristatos (Julian Glover). The long-haired French beauty Carole Bouquet is the main Bond girl, Melina Havelock, one of the best, though the casting of pro skater Lynn-Holly Johnson as the bubble-headed blonde "Bibi" was a mistake. (Even Bond turns down her advances.) John Glen directs, the first of five Bond films for him, and Sheena Easton sings the beautiful title song. read more...
