GoodFellas (1990)

When I went to see GoodFellas on opening day in 1990, my hopes were high. I had seen and loved Martin Scorsese's gritty trilogy, Mean Streets (1973), Taxi Driver (1976), and Raging Bull (1980). In the 1980s, Scorsese was still doing good work, but it was slick, MTV stuff like After Hours (1985) and The Color of Money (1986), and there was already enough of this kind of slick product. At the end of 1989 film critics overwhelmingly voted Raging Bull the best film, and Scorsese the best director, of the decade. read more...

Gangs of New York (2002)

Martin Scorsese's dream project finally explodes on the screen after years of planning and another year of delays. Leonardo DiCaprio plays the young man out to avenge his father (Liam Neeson) by joining the gang of his arch enemy (Daniel Day-Lewis). Cameron Diaz plays the ever-present girl. Deliberately drawing from silent melodramas and Italian neo-realism, the film goes way over the top in its storytelling, using grand gestures in place of subtlety. read more...

The Godfather (1972)

From our vantage point today, it's hard to imagine The Godfather becoming the highest grossing movie in the world, as it did in 1972. It seems too thoughtful for today's standards. But it is one of the greatest pictures ever made and one of the very few Best Picture Oscar winners that actually deserved the award. read more...

L.A. Confidential (1997)

In some cases, a filmmaker can live an entire career by flipping a coin. Curtis Hanson has been working steadily in Hollywood for over 20 years, with nothing but exploitative thrillers and 'B' movies -- his coin had come up tails. Now, in 1997, he has finally hit heads. read more...

Ride the High Country (1962)

Sam Peckinpah's early feature, Ride the High Country (1962) has become as rare as gold, and so its DVD debut is cause for hootin' and hollerin.' It's the ironically sprightly and funny tale of two old-time cowboys on what could be their last adventure. Hired to transport gold from a mining camp to a bank, Steve Judd (Joel McCrea) enlists the help of his old partner, Gil Westrum (Randolph Scott). read more...
