    Wisconsin Death Trip (1999)

I love it when films mix genres. The other day on TV, I saw part of The Valley of Gwangi, which combined a dinosaur flick with a western (cowboys wrangling pterodactyls). read more...

The Other Side of the Wind (2018)

In certain circles, a new film by Orson Welles is an event worthy of major enthusiasm. But there's also a certain amount of trepidation involved: What if it's no good? What if I watch it and it's not immediately apparent that it's a masterpiece? The reviews that have trickled in so far have been mainly kind; the reviewers tackled the dense, brainy, weird The Other Side of the Wind and wrote positive, if not exactly glowing reviews. Others simply panned it, perhaps not finding the characters easy enough to like. Truthfully, it's not a movie that will be simple for casual moviegoers to sit through. Indeed, it won't even be easy for people that have only seen Citizen Kane to sit through (it's very, very far away from Citizen Kane). But I nevertheless think it's a great film, and one that will interesting to re-visit and re-assess. read more...

        Chop Suey (2001)

Even if you go in not knowing who Bruce Weber is, you get a pretty good idea of him at the end of the Chop Suey, even though he rarely -- if ever -- appears on camera during the film's running time. I'm not talking about biographical details like how old he is or any awards he's won; you just know who he is. Weber's best known film up till now is the Oscar-nominated 1988 documentary Let's Get Lost, about jazz legend Chet Baker. Weber didn't just make a standard talking head biography -- he turned the film into something personal, concentrating on his own fascination with Baker's pinup allure. Chop Suey, which opens today for a two-week run at the Castro, is even more personal. read more...

        Buffalo '66 (1998)

Written and directed by and starring Vincent Gallo, Buffalo '66 tells the story of a boy-man, who wears many shields and masks, and can't communicate his real feelings. The film seems to have the same problem, but it seeps into you anyway. Gallo was an actor in interesting films like Arizona Dream and Abel Ferrara's The Funeral. He has a pointy nose and jaw, and ferocious, sleepy eyes, like he's been awake for three days and he's pissed about it. The film opens when Gallo, playing Billy Brown, gets out of prison. The first thing he has to do is take a piss, and he looks all over creation for a place to do it. Here the film looks grim and gritty, like Drugstore Cowboy, and it doesn't come off funny. I'm not sure if it was supposed to. read more...
