Independence Day (1996)

It's not so much trying to figure out which movies Emmerich stole his ideas, but rather keeping track of how many. Here's a partial list: all three Star Wars movies, Star Trek (the movies and the TV show), Dr. Strangelove, 2001, Alien and Aliens, War of the Worlds, Invaders from Mars, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Day the Earth Stood Still, all 1970's disaster movies, such as Earthquake, The Towering Inferno and Meteor, and, to some extent, "The X-Files." It even rips a song from Pulp Fiction. read more...

Thus it ends, and as the title suggests, Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is mostly just a long battle. As a standalone movie, it's not terribly interesting, but as the conclusion of the three-part, nearly eight-hour Hobbit, it's most welcome. read more...

Taken 2 (2012)

Even stranger than Liam Neeson's action new movie career is that Taken 2 is a superior sequel, leaner, smarter, and more sympathetic than its predecessor. Whenever producer/story writer Luc Besson keeps his low-budget action movies simple, he tends to succeed. read more...

Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985)

Despite the title, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985), the adventure ended pretty quickly. This fun movie had everything: it came from "The Destroyer" series of novels by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir, which could have led to a long run of movies, and the director was Guy Hamilton, the man behind Goldfinger (1964), and several other titles in the James Bond series. Wisecracking Fred Ward starred as Remo Williams, a cop whose death is faked so that he can work off the radar as a secret agent. He receives martial arts training from Master Chiun (a heavily made-up Joel Grey), recalling the previous year's The Karate Kid. Interesting trivia: the movie was filmed during the restoration of the Statue of Liberty, which was covered in scaffolding. Even today, rumors persist that Remo will return... read more...
