A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Though he has made better films throughout his career, this is still one of Wes Craven's most popular. By 1984, the slasher film had already been done to death, but Craven added a fresh take with his amazing, primal idea of a killer that attacks in dreams. His presentation is purely sensational, rather than dreamlike, with creative visual effects driving the dreams and nightmares. read more...

Mom and Dad (2018)

Written and directed by Brian Taylor (Crank and Crank: High Voltage), this nimble, kinetic, ultra-dark comedy rampages through its gleefully wicked story without overwhelming its relatable characters. read more...

Halloween: Resurrection (2002)

The eighth official movie of the Halloween franchise featured director Rick Rosenthal of Halloween II (1981), which didn't help much. Many fans consider this the worst of the ten films (so far). Halloween: Resurrection does start with a decent idea. A cynical reality TV producer, Freddie Harris (Busta Rhymes) -- who watches kung-fu movies on his hotel room TV -- gets the idea to produce a reality show in the old Myers home. He casts six attractive college students, straps them with cameras, and sets them loose in the house. Given the history of reality shows since 2002, this idea is not out of the realm of possibility. read more...

Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)

Clive Barker handed over the reigns to this sequel, taking only a "story by" credit. Peter Atkins wrote the new screenplay and Tony Randel (Ticks) directed. After the events of the first movie, Kirsty (Ashley Laurence) winds up in the hospital, where she meets a fellow patient, Tiffany (crush-worthy Imogen Boorman). An evil doctor resurrects Kirsty's stepmother from the first movie, and the doctor's kindhearted young assistant tries to help the girls. The highlight of this movie is Kirsty and Tiffany's trip to hell, with all kinds of weird mazes and nightmare imagery. When I first caught it around 1989 on VHS video, it was unlike anything I had ever seen before. read more...

Creepshow (1982)

George A. Romero's horror is mainly rooted in the human condition, with human behavior, fears, needs and desires at the forefront. So it only makes sense that he would have been attracted to the old EC horror comics, with their strange moral messages at the end of every grisly tale. After an attempt to film Stephen King's "The Stand" for the big screen failed, Romero and King instead teamed up for this film, a five-story anthology inspired by and modeled after those old comics. King wrote the original screenplay, though two of the stories ("The Crate" and "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill") were originally published elsewhere. I saw Creepshow many times as a kid on cable TV, and I enjoyed it again today. read more...
