Magic in the Moonlight (2014)

Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight -- by my count his 45th film -- is about two things. It's about the question of whether true magic exists in the world, or whether everything can be explained by mechanics and science. And it's about the wonder of love, and about how, though we might try to control it, sometimes the heart wants something totally illogical. I think it's remarkable that a 78 year-old man is still thinking about these questions, especially a man that has been through so many accusations and so much judgment. read more...

Serendipity (2001)

More so than Tom Hanks or Billy Crystal, John Cusack is the king of the modern American romantic comedy. No other actor has been able to project a cynical cool as well as transparent longing like Cusack in films like The Sure Thing, Say Anything, High Fidelity, and even America's Sweethearts. read more...

Notting Hill (1999)

Julia Roberts stars, in arguably her best role, as a lovable, glamorous movie star; Hugh Grant teams up with writer Richard Curtis for the second time, and we've got a winner. William Thacker (Grant) sells travel books in the title neighborhood, and Anna Scott (Roberts) -- in the neighborhood shooting a movie -- stops in for something to read. William's nervous charm makes an impression on her and an impossible romance is born. Curtis and director Roger Michell (far more intuitive than Four Weddings director Mike Newell) find all kinds of complex emotional entanglements having to do with celebrity, but they avoid the dark satire that could easily have resulted. Once again, the colorful supporting cast provides a welcome reality to William's fantasy life, and once again, Grant strikes up a remarkable chemistry with his co-star. Only a pandering ending ruins the spell. Alec Baldwin appears unbilled as Anna's obnoxious boyfriend. read more...

The Break-Up (2006)

What looks like a raucous frat-boy comedy is really a surprisingly canny depiction of a stagnant relationship. Brooke (Jennifer Aniston) won't say what she wants, while Gary (Vince Vaughn) does exactly as he pleases, and together they own a valuable Chicago condo. The clever director Peyton Reed (Down with Love) sustains a string of remarkable conversations, arguments and desperate ploys, while upsetting the expected rom-com formula. The humor instead seeps from the many crafty character roles; Judy Davis, Vincent D'Onofrio and Jon Favreau really shine, but Aniston and Vaughn break into entirely new territory. The movie could have used more build up and a stronger female presence, but it's a brave, subversive look at the ugly, needy side of Hollywood romance. Vaughn co-wrote the story and produced. read more...

Trouble in Paradise (1932)

If there were any justice, Trouble in Paradise would be mentioned in the same breath with Some Like It Hot, and indeed, even Citizen Kane. But it's not, and that's because hardly anyone has seen it. It's not available on video (except in an expensive and out-of-print laserdisc box set) and it's rarely screened. But now the good folks at Universal, who now own much of Paramount's old product, have agreed to show their archive print at the Roxie for a week. All fans of romantic comedies, or even fans of great filmmaking, need to see this movie. read more...
