Earth (1930)

Though virtually unknown today, Aleksandr Dovzhenko's silent film Earth (1930) received high praise almost immediately, and has been a top contender in several polls of the greatest films ever made. It's a simple propaganda piece that overcomes its flaws through graceful cinematography and editing. The story of a farm collective that obtains a tractor pales next to the images of man trying and failing to control his element. Birth, death and rebirth takes place no matter how man interferes. To that end, Dovzhenko continually squashes his human forms to the bottom of the frame, giving beautiful precedence to the sky and the horizon. read more...

The Royal Road (2015)

A deeply personal, remarkably intelligent, and profoundly moving experience, Jenni Olson's The Royal Road is not easily labeled. Olson herself calls it a "stream of consciousness" film, rejecting the loaded term "experimental film." It consists entirely of spoken narration and lovingly sustained, beautiful, meditative shots of serene San Francisco landscapes, buildings and alleyways; these shots are empty of humans, though sometimes the wind blows and things move, or a pigeon flies by, or a car passes. Olson herself provides the intermittent narration, though there is also a section spoken by Tony Kushner. Named for the highway that connects San Francisco and Los Angeles, the film follows three, intertwining threads. First, there's the heartbreaking love story of the smitten butch lesbian up north and the elusive object of her affection down south. Second, it connects the plot threads of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, which Olson cleverly untangles over the course of her film. Third, it discusses Father Junipero Serrra (1713-1784), exploring a more politicized angle over the romanticized one that is usually presented in California history. Though it has been ten years since Olson's previous movie, the powerful The Joy of Life, her new effort proves that she is a filmmaker worthy of our admiration. read more...

Monrovia, Indiana (2018)

The great documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman returns with this look at a small town in America's heartland. It's presumably an attempt to find out what makes Trump supporters tick, though politics are rarely mentioned, and such an attempt would probably be futile anyway. Instead, Wiseman does what he does best, observing the residents of Monrovia doing what they do. There are city council meetings, peeks inside a gun shop and a tattoo parlor, and the film admires the crops of corn that seem to be the center of the town's business. The camera looks at a pizza parlor, and in a most disturbing moment, a veterinary clinic (where a dog undergoes surgery). As usual, there is no narration, are no issues tackled, and no arguments made one way or the other. Wiseman is the master of "fly-on-the-wall" filmmaking, getting his camera so close and so unobtrusive, that none of his subjects ever seem to be aware that he's even there. They just talk as if no camera were present. His selection of scenes paints a portrait of a small town, both dignified and respectful, but also a little depressing. Regardless, everyone in America should be watching Wiseman regularly; he's a national treasure. read more...

Through the Olive Trees (1994)

The third part in Abbas Kiarostami's masterful Koker trilogy (sometimes called the "earthquake trilogy"), Through the Olive Trees tells a fictionalized story of the shooting of the previous film, Life and Nothing More.... A young man, Hossein (Hossein Rezai), and a young woman, Tahereh (Tahereh Ladanian), are filming a scene together. When the camera is not rolling, the young man, an illiterate stonemason, tries to propose to the young woman, who has been orphaned after the region's devastating (real-life) earthquake. She rebuffs him off-camera, and -- apparently unclear on the space between acting and life -- in the film as well. Mohamad Ali Keshavarz plays the Kiarostami-like film director who tries to sort it all out. read more...
