Bridesmaids (2011)

The delightful Kristen Wiig, who has done such memorable work in supporting roles lately, wrote the script and stars as Annie, who opened and lost a bakery during the recession and now barely scrapes by living with horrible roommates and working whatever crappy job she can get. But she still enjoys spending time with her best friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph). Unfortunately, Lillian is now about to get married; worse, she apparently has a new best friend, the wealthy and elegant Helen (Rose Byrne). Annie and Helen enter into an unspoken rivalry for Lillian's friendship, but Annie winds up losing at every turn, either by accident or by Helen's natural upper hand. read more...

The Bad News Bears (1976)

In the original The Bad News Bears, Walter Matthau stars as Morris Buttermaker, who becomes the unwitting coach of a team of misfits and outcasts (fat kids, nearsighted kids, Mexican kids, Jewish kids, foul-mouthed kids, etc.). He recruits a girl, Amanda Whurlizer (Tatum O'Neal), for a pitcher, and a unwieldy motorcycle punk Kelly Leak (Jackie Earle Haley), who both significantly improve the team's chances of winning. It suddenly occurred to me halfway through this that I was watching a W.C. Fields movie. Matthau was the perfect Fields for the modern age. He's a beer-swilling, grumbling curmudgeon who, when faced with the kids, develops a look on his face as if a dog just piddled on his best polyester suit. It's not long before the "David vs. Goliath" formula kicks in, but Matthau's perfectly restrained, brilliantly comic performance holds it together. read more...

Shanghai Noon (2000)

I'm pleased to report that Shanghai Noon is the best Jackie Chan movie in many moons. In his second Hollywood film Chan teams up with Owen Wilson, the charming, cleverly slow-witted, drawling actor who graced Bottle Rocket (1996), Anaconda (1997), and The Haunting (1999) and co-wrote the screenplays for Bottle Rocket and the brilliant Rushmore (1998). Wilson makes a much better partner for Chan than Chris Tucker did in the annoying Rush Hour (1998), in which Tucker spent the entire movie trying to upstage Chan while the script creaked along behind them. read more...

National Lampoon's Animal House (1978)

The original Saturday Night Live crew accounted for some of the funniest movies of their day. In National Lampoon's Animal House (1978), John Belushi leads a great ensemble cast and gives a delightfully physical -- almost silent -- performance, using gestures and expressions to make us laugh -- especially when visiting the girls' dormitory via a tall ladder. Fortunately, almost everyone else has at least one funny scene to equal Belushi's greatest moments. read more...

Monkey Business (1952)

Perhaps the greatest Hollywood director who ever lived, Howard Hawks knew instinctively how to use certain actors. A year before he made his masterpiece Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, he made this superb comedy starring Cary Grant and Ginger Rogers with Marilyn Monroe in a scene-stealing supporting role that helped establish her screen persona for all time. Grant plays an absent-minded professor who stumbles upon a youth formula that restores vitality but causes you to act silly; both Grant and Rogers get a chance to go crazy. Monroe plays a sexy secretary who goes for a ride in Grant's snazzy new convertible and acts as the object of his desire for an afternoon. read more...
