    From Paris with Love (2010)

Over the years, Luc Besson has successfully established a kind of B-movie factory, in which he writes stories, executive produces, and then sends others out into the field to make the actual movies. Most of the results are action movies, and most revolve around Besson's favorite theme: the mismatched, reluctant partners who team up against a greater evil. Most of these movies, frankly, have been a lot of fun. They're generally fast and lean and often feature crisp, clean action. You have to admire the guy for this; he may be the 21st century's answer to Roger Corman. read more...

    The Mark of Zorro (1940)

Rouben Mamoulian's studio-era production of the famed adventure classic feels a bit rigid and talky compared to the more rambunctious Douglas Fairbanks version (1920) and the sexier Antonio Banderas version (1998). But with Tyrone Power in the lead, it still finds room for bright, playful fun and some elegant sword fighting. Kino Lorber issued it on Blu-ray in 2016. It comes with the same audio commentary track, by film critic Richard Schickel, and the same A&E "Biography" episode (Tyrone Power) that were featured on the 2003 disc. This disc also includes trailers. read more...

      Bandidas (2006)

The same year Penelope Cruz earned her first Oscar nomination for Volver, she also starred in this fun Western, which opened sporadically in Europe and went straight to DVD in the U.S. Cruz co-stars with her real-life pal Salma Hayek, who plays a spoiled, educated banker's daughter. Cruz plays a naïve farmer's daughter. Though the girls start out on the wrong foot, they quickly find they're on the same side when a greedy, snaky U.S. businessman (Dwight Yoakam) hatches an evil plan to take over several Mexican banks. Dick Tracy (1990)

Warren Beatty's four-color Dick Tracy is a thing of beauty, with cinematographer Vittorio Storaro providing a bold, striking palette, and editor Richard Marks giving the movie a comic-strip rhythm, jumping from one picture to the next. It's tons of fun, especially given the high calibre of actors smushed into bizarre makeup formations, with Al Pacino a scenery-chewing standout as Big Boy Caprice. In all its flourish, the movie sometimes forgets to connect on a more intimate, more human level, but its high level of energy and eye-popping design still make it a must-see. Madonna famously portrayed temptress "Breathless Mahoney" and won Beatty's heart for a short while in real life; she also provided songs for an old-fashioned sounding soundtrack album. The movie won Oscars for its art direction and makeup, as well as for one of Madonna's songs, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)," written by Stephen Sondheim. Pacino received a nomination for Supporting Actor, Storaro received one for his cinematography, and there were two other nominations for Sound and Costume Design. read more...
