Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Director James Whale was approached four years after the enormous success of Frankenstein (1931) to do a sequel. His contract was such that he could refuse unless the project interested him. Whatever he saw in the script for Bride of Frankenstein, he was inspired, and he did it right. Now, Bride of Frankenstein is one of the greatest of all horror films. I recently got to see it in a beautiful new print as part of a new program of classic Universal horror films. read more...

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923)

The master of disguise Lon Chaney went from character actor to full-fledged star with this prestige project from Universal Studios. As Quasimodo, his incredible makeup included jagged teeth, a creepy, bulging eye, and even a shirtless scene where his animal-like chest and hunched back are plain as day. As with many of his other films, he plays a lovestruck outcast whose appearance is his undoing. His emotional performance, on top of his makeup skill, is astounding. read more...

Nosferatu (1922)

A small handful of movie fans caught a glimpse of a genius last winter in Shadow of the Vampire, which presented a fictional take on the silent vampire movie Nosferatu. Willem Dafoe walked away with an Oscar nomination as Max Schrek, who turns out to be a real vampire, but it was John Malkovich who portrayed the master filmmaker Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. read more...

The Invisible Man (1933)

The other day, I was at the end of a long shift in the screening room. I was about to go home, when a publicist invited us to stay and see The Invisible Man (which is part of a revival of a collection of classic Universal horror films). My colleagues and I looked at each other, shrugged, and trudged back into the dark little room for another 71 minutes of cinema. When I emerged, I was buzzing. The Invisible Man caused more of a stir in me than any of the new films I had seen that day. read more...

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)

Robert Wise directed this very good, but slowish and slightly high-minded, sci-fi picture about an alien (Michael Rennie) and his robot landing on earth and causing all kinds of hysteria. Bernard Herrmann adds one of his most famous scores, complete with the ghostly, wailing Theremin music. Fox's DVD and the disc includes documentaries, stills and trailers as well as Edmund H. North's shooting script. Wise provides a director's commentary track. Wise's next two forays into sci-fi would be The Andromeda Strain and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. read more...
