The Gold Rush (1925)

"I don't need interesting camera angles," Charlie Chaplin once said, "I am interesting." He was right; Chaplin's artistry always springs from the figure at the center of the frame rather than the arrangement of objects within the frame. Chaplin's "Little Tramp" character, with twirling cane and little moustache -- and his too-tight coat and hat and too-loose shoes and pants -- was always an outsider longing to get in. He spent every second of every film looking for the Dream: a good meal, a nice place to stay, and people to love him. read more...

The Little Mermaid (1989)

Disney's The Little Mermaid, based loosely on the Hans Christian Andersen story and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, probably doesn't look like much today. Up to then, Disney releases like The Fox and the Hound (1981), The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986) and Oliver & Company (1988) failed to excite many patrons or critics. The Little Mermaid ended Disney's long slump, became a blockbuster and started the company back up the ladder to power. A dynamic, Caribbean-flavored score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors) and an adorable heroine -- with a bell-clear singing voice -- helped pump some energy into the project. read more...

The Cameraman (1928)

After working as an independent filmmaker and creating a series of comic masterworks, writer, actor, and director Buster Keaton was approached to sign a contract with MGM. Despite warnings from friends and his own misgivings, Keaton signed and found himself in an extremely difficult situation. He later said that it was the worst mistake of his life. read more...

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

For some reason, most Santa Claus movies are flat-out stinkers, from the low budget Santa Claus (1959) and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians (1964) to the big budget Santa Claus: The Movie (1985), the remake of Miracle on 34th Street (1994) and Tim Allen's two Santa Clause movies. The only really good one is this gentle, yet modern tale of what happens when the real Santa, a.k.a. Kris Kringle (Edmund Gwenn), visits New York. read more...

Spite Marriage (1929)

Buster Keaton's final silent film, Spite Marriage (1929), is included in the 2004 two-disc DVD set, Buster Keaton Collection. It shows the filmmaker losing ground in the battle with the MGM executives. The gags here are a little more routine and tend to pale next to Keaton's earlier masterworks, but the film still has some high points and an excellent female lead. read more...
