Faust (1926)

After Murnau's international success with The Last Laugh, he was given carte blanche for his upcoming projects. The very expensive and mesmerizing Faust was one result of this. Based on Goethe's play, the film tells the story of an old man, Faust (Gösta Ekman), who sells his soul to the devil (otherwise known as Mephisto, played by Emil Jannings) in order to fight off the pestilence plaguing his hometown. read more...

The Dead Zone (1983)

This adaptation of a Stephen King bestseller was David Cronenberg's first "job for hire" in Hollywood, and for a time it was also his most universally acclaimed movie. Maybe it served as a kind of inoculation toward his more personal works. Christopher Walken stars in a terrifically modulated performance, part deranged, part haunted, as Johnny Smith. Just after he becomes engaged to his beloved Sarah (Brooke Adams), he gets into a car accident that leaves him in a coma. Years later, he awakens to discover that not only is Sarah married to someone else, but also he has the power to see the future of anyone he touches. After a series of shocking events, he retreats to live as privately as possible, but visions of an up-and-coming politician (Martin Sheen) begin to draw him out. read more...

The Mummy (1932)

Far from featuring a mindless, bandage-clad monster shambling around and moaning at people, The Mummy is more an intricately lit, atmospheric chiller where the biggest shock comes from entering an eerily decorated room. read more...

Nosferatu (1922)

A small handful of movie fans caught a glimpse of a genius last winter in Shadow of the Vampire, which presented a fictional take on the silent vampire movie Nosferatu. Willem Dafoe walked away with an Oscar nomination as Max Schrek, who turns out to be a real vampire, but it was John Malkovich who portrayed the master filmmaker Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau. read more...

The Hunt (2013)

Haling from Denmark and directed by Thomas Vinterberg (The Celebration), The Hunt seems to me one of those movies created for the purpose of being officially approved for export and submitted to the Academy for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. In other words, it's heavy on issues and light on artistry, and generally pretty disposable once awards season is over. Perhaps even worse, The Hunt starts off with great promise before it fails. read more...
