The Kill Team (2019)

One thing that can be learned from stories about war — especially the wars of the past fifty years — is that the situations are so awful, the camaraderie of soldiers becomes more important than anything else. read more...

White Boy Rick (2018)

This gritty, scuzzy biopic starts well, with fine casting and performances and vivid emotional bonds, but it eventually becomes a stern cautionary tale and sinks into a downbeat, hopeless final act. read more...

A Private War (2018)

In A Private War, Rosamund Pike gives a committed, detailed performance as war correspondent Marie Colvin, who died while covering the siege of Homs in Syria in 2012. It's a fine piece of work, and a great character, an intrepid rule-breaker who was so committed to bringing the truth to light that she neglected her own safety. (Her trademark eyepatch came after losing her sight in one eye in an explosion in Sri Lanka.) Very few other actors have much of a chance in their scenes with Pike, but Tom Hollander fares the best as her Sunday Times editor, Sean Ryan, whose relationship with her is interestingly complex. Stanley Tucci is a natural scene-stealer, but his character as a brief boyfriend of Colvin's is relatively unimportant in the grand scheme of things. The second-biggest role belongs to Jamie Dornan as photographer Paul Conroy, but he's almost constantly lost in Colvin's shadow. In the film, Colvin continually stresses finding the personal within her stories, and the movie itself fails to do just that. It stays firmly on the surface, rigid with importance. It chugs along in a constant rage about the continuing misery in Syria, and about the general indifference and ignorance of the rest of the world. It's the feature directing debut of Matthew Heineman, who made the excellent documentaries Cartel Land and City of Ghosts, and while he combines realism and fiction in interesting ways, the movie is just a gray, brutal assault, a stern lecture. It could rally a few to action, but the more likely effect is that viewers will feel punished. read more...

Pilgrimage (2017)

Brendan Muldowney directs this historical dirge with snooze-inducing seriousness, a dutiful reliance on genre chestnuts and an overall lack of excitement; Game of Thrones this is most certainly not. read more...

    Adoration (2009)

Academy-Award nominated director Atom Egoyan returns to indie filmmaking after a pit stop in Hollywood (Where the Truth Lies), but the result is unfocused and heavy-handed. The main thrust is a desire to say something -- anything -- about terrorism and the 9/11 attacks, but Egoyan's idea makes no sense. For a class assignment, a high school teen, Simon (Devon Bostick -- who looks like a magazine model, with just as much depth), makes up a story about his parents being involved in an attempt to blow up a commercial airline. His teacher (Arsinée Khanjian), also in charge of drama club, encourages him to dig deeper, and also to pretend that the story is real. She also disguises herself in a veil and drops by Simon's house to test his supposedly narrow-minded uncle, Tom (Scott Speedman). A good chunk of the movie involves characters sitting in front of computer screens and listening to people argue about Simon's story -- all of which sounds like rants and platitudes. Rachel Blanchard plays Simon's mom in flashbacks. Egoyan's tone is somber and chilly, as usual, but that approach only makes his scenario all the more puzzling. read more...
