    The Strange Woman (1946)

Edgar G. Ulmer's The Strange Woman (1946) is one of his few larger-budgeted pictures, and, conversely, one of his least personal. Ulmer was offered the job by producer and star Hedy Lamarr, his childhood friend, and since his regular employer PRC Studio, had recently shut its doors, he had no reason not to take it. read more...

      Fences (2016)

For his third time out as director, Denzel Washington adapts August Wilson's 1987 play, which he performed on Broadway in 2010. It's a prestigious production, with Wilson — who died in 2005 — getting sole screenwriting credit, and with the play's Tony awards and Pulitzer Prizes hovering over everything. Yet, when it begins, it quickly creates a vivid, interior world of garbage collector Troy Maxson (Washington). read more...

        American Pastoral (2016)

Ewan McGregor makes his directorial debut with an arguably unwise choice, an adaptation of an acclaimed novel by Philip Roth. His American Pastoral doesn't fare quite as well as this year's Indignation or 2008's Elegy — which were based on slimmer literary offerings — but it does share certain strengths with 2003's The Human Stain. Basically, it's difficult to translate Roth's themes to the screen, but his stories at least offer actors a chance at rich characters, and the new film features several strong performances. read more...

        Clash by Night (1952)

Only a year after the sensation of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), RKO probably ordered something similar when they assigned Fritz Lang to direct this Clifford Odets play. Though Clash by Night doesn't have Brando, Lang was twice the director that Elia Kazan was and manages to stitch together a moving, nervously effective film. The great Barbara Stanwyck appears at the height of her powers as Mae, a restless, wandering soul who returns to her hometown, a fishing village, when she runs out of places to go. read more...

The Falcon and the Snowman (1985)

John Schlesinger's The Falcon and the Snowman tells the gripping true story of Christopher Boyce and Andrew Daulton Lee, who met as altar boys and who were eventually arrested for selling classified information to the Soviet Union. Unlike many true stories, Schlesinger and screenwriter Steven Zaillian focus on details, character, and atmosphere. They manage to capture the slow arc in which two American guys, from wealthy families, could somehow justify doing what they did. read more...
