The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

The toughest job a filmmaker can take on is translating a beloved novel to the screen: you're torn between being completely faithful and showing your own vision. Whereas Chris Columbus made Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone with no directorial personality whatsoever, the new The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was helmed by the far more interesting Peter Jackson, who made the 1994 masterpiece Heavenly Creatures and the raunchy B-movies Bad Taste and Dead-Alive. Rather than delivering a faceless product, Jackson imbues his personal signature on the fantasy epic, while still sticking close to the source. read more...

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Newcomer David Yates somehow landed the job of directing the fifth Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), and while the result was passable, it was a typical newcomer's job. For the new sixth film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Yates returns refreshed, and much more intuitive and confident. Better still, the series' regular scribe Steve Kloves returns after taking the last film off, and his skill at balancing the books' gargantuan plots and characters is still apparent. read more...

Minority Report (2002)

Despite its moldy story twists, this Steven Spielberg spectacular ranks as the best thing he's done since the Indiana Jones films; fantasy is far better suited to him than those weepy message movies. This time he adapts his displaced father obsession to an extremely dark milieu, and it fits like a leather glove. read more...

Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope (1977)

I was about eight or nine when I saw Star Wars, so it's ingrained in my consciousness in a way that defies critical thought. It spoke to a movie-crazy kid, and any kid who gazes wistfully out at the horizon (whether it has one or two suns) and hopes for some kind of adventure. read more...
