The Circle (2000)
Just a few weeks ago, the Shooting Gallery film series released Marziyeh Meshkini's and Mohsen Makhmalbaf's The Day I Became a Woman. I was afraid then that no one would see that beautiful and vibrant film because it seemed to be about "battered Iranian women," though it was really about their breathtaking attempts to escape domination. Now comes Jafar Panahi's The Circle, a far more heavyweight, but equally brilliant film about women whose escape seems unlikely. read more...

Come and See (1985)
In a perfect world, Come and See, opening June 29, 2001, at the Roxie for a week's run, would put an end to all World War II movies. Indeed, though I was a huge movie buff as far back as 1985 and kept track of the comings and goings of new movies, I'd never heard of Come and See until now. If it had received a wider release, it certainly would have diminished the impact of something like Platoon, and today, it makes Pearl Harbor look absolutely useless. read more...

Locke (2014)
The movie Buried (2010) featured one man in a box with a cell phone, and nothing else. It had no other settings, no flashbacks or flash-forwards, and no subplots. It was told as a nail-biting thriller. Now Steven Knight's Locke uses the same setup, but for a radically different, more ambitious payoff. read more...
