Searching for Sugar Man (2012)

The music business has a lot of great stories, but there may be none quite as great as this one. The documentary Searching for Sugar Man begins with an obscure Detroit singer called Rodriguez, once compared to Bob Dylan, but could not sell any records. That might be the end, but -- somehow -- bootleg tapes of Rodriguez's albums made it all the way to South Africa, where they became part of the rallying cry against apartheid. His music was accompanied by a legend that he had committed suicide on stage. Several journalists tried to find out more, but were stymied. read more...

Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser (1988)

The same year he directed Bird (1988), about jazz legend Charlie Parker, Clint Eastwood helped produce the excellent documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser. Directed by Charlotte Zwerin (Gimme Shelter), the film collects tons of recently-found vintage footage of Monk in action; playing, talking, and spending time with friends. Zwerin connected the old footage with new interviews with Monk's friends and collaborators. The portrait that emerges is one of genius, sadness, and a certain withdrawn forlorn-ness, as shown in a single, haunting shot of Monk spinning around in circles in a crowded airport. read more...

Nanook of the North (1922)

Robert J. Flaherty is the father of the documentary for many reasons. The first is because he approached his subject with curiosity, following the stories that already existed, rather than imposing his own story upon his subjects. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Flaherty realized that there was no such thing as a completely objective documentary. As soon as a camera was introduced into any situation, the natural flow of things changed. So not only did Flaherty embrace this idea, he celebrated it, bringing his own personality into his films. read more...

Romántico (2005)

Mark Becker's Romantico is my favorite documentary in well over a year, simply because it's about a person rather than an issue. It begins in San Francisco's Mission District as Carmelo Muñiz Sanchez, a mariachi, serenades the customers at the neighborhood's various yummy tacquerias. We learn that Carmelo makes about $100 a night, a portion of which he sends back to his wife and two daughters in Mexico. After a while he misses them too much and returns, but work isn't so plentiful or lucrative there. Worse, his chances of returning to the U.S. are slim, at best. read more...
