I Lost My Body (2019)

This hand-drawn animated movie from France starts with genuine amazement, suggesting the promise of something we've never seen before. In I Lost My Body, a severed hand frees itself from a refrigerator in what appears to be a lab or a hospital, and with great effort (skittering on its fingertips), it eludes capture and escapes. Then the movie flashes back to the hand's owner, Naoufel (voiced by Hakim Faris) and things grow quite a bit more ordinary and predictable. As an ineffectual pizza delivery man, he falls in love with one of his customers, Gabrielle (voiced by Victoire Du Bois) and then takes a job at a woodshop to be near her. Shy and uncertain, he mostly just stalks her, and builds her an igloo on the roof of the building. The various saws and blades in the woodshop provide a clue as to what will happen to the hand. The animation is quite simple, and even rudimentary at times, which can be both refreshing and disappointing. read more...

The Fountain (2006)

Some will consider Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain a disaster, while others will cherish it. It's an awesome work, dazzlingly inventive, constantly surprising, and told with a minimum of showbiz hoopla; it seems entirely outside the current state of things. It may become a cult sci-fi item, belonging with other slightly out-of-step oddities like John Boorman's Zardoz (1974), David Lynch's Dune (1984), and Tarkovsky's Stalker (1979). read more...

Wings of Desire (1987)

Wim Wenders created one of the German New Wave's most popular and beloved films with Wings of Desire, a gorgeous and heartbreaking look at angels in Berlin. One such angel (Bruno Ganz) falls in love with a trapeze artist (Solveig Dommartin) and longs to become human so that he can be with her. Peter Falk gives a terrific performance as an American actor who gives the angel some advice. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds appear, performing in a bar. The 2009 Criterion Collection disc lovingly highlights the film's stunning mixed black-and-white and color photography and comes with a Wenders/Falk commentary track, deleted scenes, and more. Wenders made a sequel, Faraway, So Close! (1993). Avoid the stupid American remake, City of Angels (1998). read more...

Big Fish (2003)

With Big Fish, the former boy genius director Tim Burton works from two new angles. He embraces the art of storytelling for the first time and gives us his first glimpse of "realism." It may make Burton sound like a no-talent hack for never trying these basic things before. Very simply, Burton has up to now only been interested in characters and places. He has conjured up bizarre, damaged heroes and villains, placed them within the context of some lopsided world, and set them loose. read more...

The Red Violin (1999)

The Red Violin is a surprisingly exciting and delicate epic filmed in several different countries and languages, by writer/director Francois Girard (32 Short Films About Glenn Gould). The movie follows the 300 year-history of a beautiful and perfect violin, which is imbued with its maker's dead wife's spirit. In a 1990s auction several characters who have a history with the violin bid on it. Samuel L. Jackson is brilliant as a violin expert who wants the violin for himself. The movie stumbles on a few conventional moments now and then, but it works well all the same. Greta Scacchi (The Player) also stars. John Corigliano's musical score won an Oscar. read more...
