Lansky (2021)

Not much different than the plethora of gangster movies that populated cinemas of the 1990s, Lansky gets by on Keitel's impressive performance, as well on a handful of surprising story twists. read more...

K-19: The Widowmaker (2002)

Stuck with an ill-timed release in the summer of 2002, among the popcorn movies, Kathryn Bigelow's intense, harrowing K-19: The Widowmaker received mixed reviews, many of which called the film overly serious and too long. (Not surprising, in a season that promises thrills rather than cold, hard drama.) Now that Bigelow has won an Oscar for Best Director, it's time to give the movie a second chance. read more...

The Black Book (1949)

Tough guy director Anthony Mann and the genius cinematographer John Alton worked together six times. Four of them were on films noir -- T-Men (1947), Raw Deal (1948), He Walked by Night (1948), and Border Incident (1949) -- where Alton's stark, high contrast blacks and whites really highlighted despair and panic. The fifth collaboration was on a Western, Devil's Doorway, also fairly noirish. But the sixth was something of a costume movie, The Black Book -- a.k.a. Reign of Terror -- and not so easy to describe. read more...

    Leave Her to Heaven (1945)

Gene Tierney received her only Oscar nomination for her role in Leave Her to Heaven, as a psychotically jealous beauty bent on destroying the men in her life. Directed by John M. Stahl, the film is notable for its exquisite Technicolor cinematography, used in direct contrast to the story's dark, noirish qualities. As Ellen, Tierney makes a striking entrance, gazing with fixed intensity at writer Richard Harland (Cornel Wilde) on a train. They eventually marry, but Ellen becomes jealous of Richard's invalid brother (Darryl Hickman). Vincent Price co-stars -- in a role similar to the one he played in Laura -- as Tierney's jilted former lover. read more...

    Man of the West (1958)

With this film, the great American director Anthony Mann simultaneously left the third stage of his career and entered the fourth; he went from unremarkable B-films, to film noir, to Westerns and finally to epics. Man of the West is a combination of the James Stewart Westerns that came before it and the epic ideas that would drive his final few films. read more...
