The Intruder (2005)

The latest release by the brilliant French filmmaker Claire Denis, The Intruder is a gloriously poetic, yet often baffling experience about an old man's final days before, during and after a black market heart transplant. The man (Michel Subor) travels from snowy, chilly woods on one side of the world to a tropical paradise on the other, looking for his neglected offspring. read more...

Certified Copy (2011)

After a decade's worth of experiments with video (Ten, Five Dedicated to Ozu, Shirin, etc.), the great Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami returns to the commercial fold, and this time with a genuine international movie star, Juliette Binoche, helping out (she also appeared briefly in Shirin). Theoretically, this could be Kiarostami's "selling out" or else his most accessible movie to date, but instead it's one of his most deliriously puzzling. Most viewers -- especially those that demand answers from their movies -- will walk away not knowing what to make of it. But if you allow more than one possibility to this scenario, it emerges as a masterpiece, and Kiarostami's best film since The Wind Will Carry Us (1999). read more...

Cemetery of Splendor (2016)

This one is only for the most adventurous moviegoers and die-hard cineastes, the ones who regularly dip into the works of Ingmar Bergman, Andrei Tarkovsky, Bela Tarr, Alain Resnais, and Robert Bresson. It comes from Thai-born, and Chicago-educated filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul (you can call him "Joe"). Weerasethakul's poetic, dreamy films are frequently set in beautiful, realistic settings, with surreal things happening; people sometimes changing into other things, or seeing ghosts, or other phenomena. Cemetery of Splendor (2016) takes place in a rural hospital (actually converted schoolhouse), where soldiers suffer from some kind of mysterious sleeping sickness. As part of some kind of experimental technique, their beds are surrounded by glowing rods that slowly change color, casting moody glows on everything. read more...

Vanya on 42nd Street (1994)

I've never really seen anything like Vanya on 42nd Street. The movie starts with Louis Malle's familiar gritty, low budget camerawork that characterized My Dinner With Andre. We see Wallace Shawn, now more readily recognized on the street than he was thirteen years ago, standing eating a knish. Andre Gregory walks down 42nd street, followed by Julianne Moore and other actors. They meet in front of a dilapidated old theatre and go inside. We know we are going to see Chekov's Uncle Vanya. One woman says she's never seen it. Gregory begins to explain it to her. Everyone begins to wander around the beautiful, crumbling old theatre, chatting, setting up. Wallace Shawn lays down on a bench and shuts his eyes. Then he wakes up. Two people begin having a conversation. Slowly, we realize that the play has begun. Shawn is now Uncle Vanya. read more...

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2011)

I have been a fan of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's for years, and his stature keeps growing. His films are becoming more and more acclaimed throughout the world. Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives is his fifth feature -- not counting a co-directed musical comedy called Iron Pussy -- and it won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. However, they are no easier to understand. They are among the most mystical and mystifying films of our time. read more...
