Lady Vengeance (2006)

Director Park Chan-wook establishes himself as the superstar of Korean action cinema this week with Lady Vengeance, the conclusion of his "revenge trilogy." Most Bay Area fans probably started with the second episode, Oldboy (2003), followed by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002). (They were released here in that order in 2004.) That's probably a good thing, as Sympathy proved almost too random and pointless to be paired with the stunning Oldboy. read more...

City of God (2002)

Magic tricks -- conjuring up a dove or making a woman levitate -- only work depending on the presentation. But sometimes even a first-class presentation won't disguise the fact that the tricks are old and have been done before. read more...

Oldboy (2003)

According to some insiders, Park Chan-wook's Oldboy was just a hair away from winning the 2004 Palm D'Or that eventually went to Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, which is just as well. Now instead of being an international award winner, it's an extremely cool little gem that can be truly discovered by appreciative fans. (Note: it's actually the middle part of a trilogy, beginning with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and ending with Lady Vengeance, but it stands on its own.) read more...

Trainspotting (1996)

When I was 16 or 17, I loved the film A Clockwork Orange. I still love it, but not anymore as a fun and comical romp through a sadistic wasteland. Now the violence in the film leaves me quiet instead of laughing. I imagine Trainspotting will have the same effect on youth today. Especially because the film is far more entertaining than anything else playing in the multiplexes right now (except maybe Supercop). read more...

Fight Club (1999)

Seeing a David Fincher film (Alien 3, Seven and The Game) is like having an electronic gizmo plugged into your brain. It goes directly to its darkest corners and sucks at your deepest fears and desires. It's an invasive experience. Yet the whole thing feels electronic somehow. I don't know how future generations will regard this pop auteur, but for now, he's just the shot of electricity the cinema needs. read more...
