Aladdin (1992)

This follow-up to Disney's Beauty and the Beast (1991) lacks the greatness of its predecessor but is nevertheless a satisfying little gem. It has a unique patchwork quality consisting of effective and not-so-effective elements, mostly because of the great songwriter Howard Ashman's death during production. Disney inexplicably hired Tim Rice to work with Alan Menken filling in the remaining songs, and their dreary, soulless sound clashes sharply with Ashman and Menken's lively, jovial numbers. (Even worse, one of the Rice songs, "A Whole New World" went on to win the Oscar.) read more...

Penguins of Madagascar (2014)

It was immediately clear, in the 2005 animated feature Madagascar, that the movie's main draw was not the angst-ridden zoo animals voiced by recognizable stars, but rather the super-cool team of penguins that operated in the story's margins. read more...

Back to the Future (1985)

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd play Marty McFly and Doc Emmett Brown, the two time-hoppers with a maximum of chemistry, and Mary Steenburgen charms as Lloyd's love interest in Part III. Universal's new three-disc set comes with plenty of documentaries, deleted scenes, and a few funny outtakes. Elisabeth Shue replaced Claudia Wells as Marty's girlfriend for Parts 2-3. Crispin Glover is great as Marty's dad. Flea, Elijah Wood and Jason Scott Lee can be glimpsed in smaller parts. Steven Spielberg executive produced all three films. read more...

WALL·E (2008)

To date, my favorite Pixar film is Toy Story 2 (1999) followed by The Incredibles (2004), with all the rest jockeying for third. But now director Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo) has delivered WALL·E, whose first 60 minutes ranks with the best work Pixar has ever done, but whose final 30 minutes leaves something to be desired. That could still be enough to send it to third place. read more...

Toy Story 3 (2010)

The geniuses at Pixar haven't necessarily improved upon Toy Story 2 (1999), but more than ten years later they have effectively repeated its themes and provided a terrific and funny summer adventure. Andy (voiced by John Morris, who has provided Andy's voice in all three films) has continued to grow, and is now ready for college. His mother has ordered him to clean out his room. Everything in it either goes with him to college, into the attic, or into the trash. read more...
