Big Time (1988)

Some non-fiction films attempt to teach people about new things, but a few others preach only to the converted. The 1988 concert movie Big Time, starring Tom Waits, falls solidly in the latter category. In other words, if you're not a Tom Waits fan already, Big Time will not help you. If you are a Tom Waits fan, Big Time is a treat. It opens today exclusively at the Rafael Theater. read more...

    Gates of Heaven (1978)

Errol Morris's Gates of Heaven is a strange, sweet movie. At any moment it can make you weep, or rage at the treatment of its subjects. It can make you think twice about the nature of life as we know it. Technically, it's a movie about pet cemeteries, but specifically it's a movie about life and death and everything in-between. read more...

Exit Through the Gift Shop (2010)

It tells a story so odd that it almost couldn't be true. It begins with Frenchman named Thierry Guetta, who obsessively begins documenting his life with a video camera. The movie hints that he's afraid of missing something and wants to capture absolutely everything on video. Thierry becomes fascinated with his cousin, a famous graffiti artist named "Space Invader," and begins filming the artist's exploits, pasting up signs in the dead of night. From there, Thierry naturally meets other graffiti artists, who, we learn, travel the world to tag international walls with their signature art. Among them is the American Shepard Fairey, who is known for his "Andre the Giant" and "Obey" stickers. read more...

    Alamar (2010)

It starts with the story of a whirlwind love affair between a man of Mayan heritage, Jorge, and an Italian woman, Roberta. They have a son, Natan, before they realize that their two worlds are just too different and they split up. Alamar begins as Natan goes to spend a little time with his father, a fisherman in the Banco Chinchorro area near Mexico. Jorge -- who works with his father, Natan's grandfather -- goes about his day and teaches Natan all about fishing and boating and snorkeling, as if they were the most amazing new toys. Natan becomes enamored of a beautiful egret he names Blanquita. read more...

    The Beaches of Agnes (2009)

In 2000 Agnes Varda made one of the most successful films of her entire 50-year career, The Gleaners and I, a kind of documentary about people who "glean," or pick up and use what has been discarded. Varda quickly realized that filming was also an act of "gleaning" and soon turned what might have been an ordinary documentary into a delightful personal essay, filled with her own thoughts and musings. The film jumped easily and playfully from subject to subject, and Varda became comfortable enough to leave in "useless" -- yet interesting -- footage that any lesser filmmaker would have cut out. read more...
