    Tangerine (2015)

Shot entirely on the iPhone 5s, Sean Baker's Tangerine could have been a gimmick film, but it immediately starts to work like a good movie should, and all thoughts of gimmicks slip away as we become involved in the characters. It's Christmas Eve in Los Angeles (the color scheme is orange and pink rather than red and green), and two trans woman sex workers, Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Mya Taylor), are chatting over a donut. Sin-Dee has just been released from prison, and Alexandra lets it slip that her boyfriend, Chester (James Ransone), has cheated on her with Dinah (Mickey O'Hagan). Sin-Dee begins a neighborhood-wide search for both the girl and the cheater, pausing only for Alexandra's show at a seedy club. Meanwhile, an Armenian taxi driver, Razmik (Karren Karagulian) would rather engage Sin-Dee's services than spent Christmas with his family. The movie feels very much part of a community, a little enclosed world all by itself within a big city. For all the not-exactly-admirable activities going on, these people have a touching bond, and when the movie finds its moving conclusion, our affection has been earned. Baker's previous film was the equally good Starlet, and he has proven himself a director to watch. read more...

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck (2015)

I am a huge music nerd and Nirvana is perhaps my favorite band of all time. Like an earlier generation and JFK, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I learned that Kurt Cobain was dead, and it affected me deeply; like many others of my age, I had connected with his music in a profound way. (And, yes, I own an old CD of Bleach.) So it's not easy for me to watch a documentary like Brett Morgen's Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck lightly. But I will say that I liked what I saw. It made me appreciate Kurt's music and artistry anew. Morgen was given access to tons of intimate home movie footage -- so intimate that it shows Courtney Love naked -- and deals openly with Kurt's drug use, mainly as a way to kill his undiagnosed stomach pain. As with Morgen's Chicago 10, the filmmaker also uses animated sequences to flesh out Kurt's audio recordings. We see Kurt bristling at interviewers' questions, and dealing with the music biz. But, ultimately, the movie manages to paint a portrait of a man so very lonely and brilliant that your heart breaks every time he creates something. Morgen uses interviews sparingly, and mainly focuses on Love an Kurt's bandmate Krist Novoselic (who goes all the way back to the beginning of Nirvana), and the movie also serves to exonerate Love from her image as Kurt's destroyer (Kurt clearly loved her very much). The movie includes a ton of amazing music, from well-known and less-known Nirvana recordings to Kurt noodling around with the Beatles' "And I Love Her." read more...

      Honey Boy (2019)

Shia LaBeouf, that former child star who graduated to starring roles in massive, multi-million dollar Hollywood blockbusters, and then more or less imploded, wrote the screenplay for what would become Honey Boy in rehab, as part of his required therapy. Admirably, he could have stayed away from the whole thing, or taken over and managed it himself, but instead, he gave it to director Alma Har'el. (They had worked together previously on the Sigur Rós music video "Fjögur píanó.") Then, as further therapy, LaBeouf agreed to play a version of his own father — similar to Mario Van Peebles in Baadasssss! — and act out painful moments that might have led to LaBeouf's being diagnosed with PTSD. It's quite an act of emotional bravery, and LaBeouf gives it everything, even going so far as to wear a prosthetic device in his nose to make his speech sound nasally and restrict his breathing, suggesting years of cocaine abuse. read more...
