G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)

With director Jon M. Chu -- who is experienced in making musicals -- taking over this franchise from the sloppy, noisy Stephen Sommers, the second G.I. JOE movie has a great deal more grace and goodwill than its predecessor. It moves well, offers up the occasional surprise, and never takes itself too seriously. read more...

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)

Quentin Tarantino said not long ago that Kill Bill is his "grindhouse" movie, which is a term that most people may not understand. A "grindhouse" movie once played in specialized, seedy, urban theaters, and consisted of low-grade fare like extra-gory horror films, sleazy sex stories, cheap kung-fu flicks and other marginal films. read more...

Unstoppable (2010)

Tony Scott's Unstoppable is, in a word, awesome. This is a major surprise, coming after such a stupid looking trailer, and after Scott's four other fairly mediocre movies with star Denzel Washington. (OK. Crimson Tide was pretty terrific, but that was 15 years ago.) Additionally, if one were to take a poll at the beginning of the year to choose between Scott's Unstoppable and his brother Ridley's Robin Hood, the odds would not have been on this runaway train movie. But while Ridley made a turgid, boring, serious summer adventure movie, Tony has made an exciting, lightweight, fast-paced Christmas season movie. And I take back any reservations I had before; there's no question about which is the superior movie. read more...

Danger: Diabolik (1968)

Based on an Italian comic book (or "fumetti"), this Mario Bava crime thriller has never enjoyed the devotion of Bava's horror films. It probably suffered from bad timing, released among the campy but similar movies Batman (1966) and Barbarella (1968). But looking at the film on Paramount's superb new DVD, it's clear that a neglected masterpiece of the genre has now emerged. read more...

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)

Steven Spielberg's Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) is more lighthearted and fun than its predecessor Raiders of the Lost Ark; it even begins with a musical number ("Anything Goes"). It's still thrilling, but the thrills come at the expense of the quiet moments on one end, and darkness on the other. In this movie, darkness is reserved for its silly villain, Mola Ram, who hypnotizes Indy (his own darkness is gone; it now has to be induced by others). The "quiet" moments are replaced in this movie by Indy bickering with his new girlfriend Willie Scott (Kate Capshaw) and taking care of a cunning little kid named Short Round (Ke Huy Quan). read more...
