99 Homes (2015)

The acclaimed indie filmmaker Ramin Bahrani (Goodbye Solo), who regularly and bravely focuses on heartbreaking trials of life while keeping his stories rooted in humanity, turns in some of his finest work. A work of great power and subtlety, 99 Homes manages to talk about one of today's most pressing and troubling issues without getting preachy or overbearing. At the same time, the movie borrows the classical structure of the Faust story, but still manages to feel immediate and relevant. read more...

Citizenfour (2014)

Sometimes a documentary goes beyond all critical appraisal and simply needs to be seen by every American. Although I understand that a theatrical release gives it more credibility, frankly it ought to be shown free, online. Perhaps in a few months, it will. read more...

The Look of Silence (2015)

Joshua Oppenheimer's follow-up, or companion piece, to his extraordinary The Act of Killing, The Look of Silence feels slightly smaller-scale, which is not necessarily a bad thing in this case. It follows an Indonesian man, an optician, who interviews various individuals who were purportedly involved with the killings of so-called communists in the 1960s. The man's brother was killed during that time, and he proves to be an assertive, canny interviewer; one subject angrily says that he's even pushier than "Josh." Oppenheimer includes several asides, visits with the interviewer's century-old parents, and other striking images that allow time for the atrocities, and the human memory, to sink in. The Act of Killing was nominated for an Oscar, but did not win, and this one could make up for it. read more...

The Hurt Locker (2009)

I've been dragged to most of the recent Iraq war movies, and some of them have been interesting and informative, but they all have one thing in common: a somber, self-important, condescending attitude about the horrors and futility of war. The problem is that I already know all this going in. What I want to see is some explanation. If war is so horrible, why does everyone keep making war movies? Why on earth should we watch them? Certainly it's not to change anyone's mind, because these movies generally preach to the converted. But finally, here comes Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker, and it does something that all the others fail to do. It considers the dangerous idea that, indeed, war can be fun. read more...

13th (2016)

Director Ava Duvernay last brought us Selma (2014), an unexpectedly brilliant biopic of Martin Luther King Jr. and his 1965 march in Alabama to call attention to voting rights. In a controversial Oscar season, her film won an Oscar for Best Song, and received a nomination for Best Picture, and nothing else. Now Duvernay takes off the gloves and offers 13th (2016), a shattering, essential new documentary. While the end of slavery and the beginning of the Civil Rights movement were great moments in American history, Duvernay's film argues that they are connected by a long string of whites in power, cultivating a fear of black people and using that fear to acquire not only more power, but wealth. read more...
