    Crossfire (1947)

After Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity, Edward Dmytryk's Crossfire was the only 1940s-era film noir to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, and the reason is clear. Not because it's better than any other noir, but because it has a very strong and powerful message against anti-Semitism. read more...

    The Big Combo (1955)

Joseph H. Lewis's The Big Combo looks and feels more sophisticated than his more primal, more erotic Gun Crazy, but it has its own perverse pleasures. Up front, there's the astounding black-and-white cinematography by the great John Alton, who used blacker blacks and whiter whites than anyone else in the business. He creates pools of hope and despair right from the beginning as a gangster's unhappy girlfriend, Susan Lowell (Jean Wallace) tries to run away from her duty of sitting next to him at a boxing match. She passes through darkness and light before a pair of henchmen catch her. read more...

      Kill the Messenger (2014)

Michael Cuesta's Kill the Messenger takes on dense material, and for the most part makes it feel important without feeling heavy or overstuffed. First, it provides a biographical portrait of reporter Gary Webb (Jeremy Renner), who wrote for the San Jose Mercury News and committed suicide in 2004. Second, it chronicles Webb's biggest story, published in 1996, asserting that, in the 1980s, the CIA used profits from crack cocaine sold on the streets of Los Angeles to back the Contras in the war in Nicaragua. Third, it follows Webb's downfall, not at the hands of the CIA, but at the hands of other journalists. read more...

        Pickup on South Street (1953)

Though he was mostly known for war movies and Westerns, Samuel Fuller's 1953 crime film Pickup on South Street is, along with Shock Corridor (1963), arguably his finest work. Using his newspaper reporter skills to gather all the information he could from the street, Fuller made his pickpocket story as realistic and as gritty as possible, and it's still just as shockingly potent today. read more...

The Falcon and the Snowman (1985)

John Schlesinger's The Falcon and the Snowman tells the gripping true story of Christopher Boyce and Andrew Daulton Lee, who met as altar boys and who were eventually arrested for selling classified information to the Soviet Union. Unlike many true stories, Schlesinger and screenwriter Steven Zaillian focus on details, character, and atmosphere. They manage to capture the slow arc in which two American guys, from wealthy families, could somehow justify doing what they did. read more...
