    Dallas Buyers Club (2013)

Director Jean-Marc Vallée, whose last movie was the bland costume epic The Young Victoria, films Dallas Buyers Club in a kind of grungy, muddy haze, perhaps trying to recall the look of 1980s home video. But this approach doesn't help the grim, queasy story about sickness go down any easier. The movie also takes many shortcuts, compressing and compacting its story down to manageable size. This technique squashes any potential moments of life, as well as making the main character's transformation seem too clean and abrupt. read more...

      The Hurricane (1999)

Denzel Washington boxes, hollers, sweats, swoons, and ages in The Hurricane, a great showcase for the actor's skills. Washington is always so good, but usually gets stuck in less-than-promising roles (like The Bone Collector). The Hurricane isn't much better, but at least this role is worth his time. read more...

        Life Itself (2014)

For many of us in this business, Roger Ebert (1942-2013) was a friend, a mentor, and an inspiration. I never met him, but I saw him at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 2010; he had already lost his speech and used his computer to address the audience. Four grateful filmmakers, Philip Kaufman, Errol Morris, Jason Reitman, and Terry Zwigoff, spoke on his behalf, and Roger used the evening to show a movie that he loved that he felt needed more attention, Julia. read more...

          Emperor (2013)

Arguably, the historical drama Emperor misses a chance to dig deeper into some flawed characters and a volatile situation. It also takes questionable liberties with the invention of an interracial love story for the main character that didn't actually happen. And certainly, it would have been fun to see more of Tommy Lee Jones' snappy supporting performance as MacArthur. Overall, the movie could have taken a cue from the similarly structured, but much richer Lincoln. read more...

            Harriet (2019)

Many films depicting slavery in the history of the United States can feel punishing, lecturing. For her superb new Harriet, Kasi Lemmons has daringly taken a positive approach, inviting viewers into her narrative, rather than talking down to them. (She has said that Harriet is a "freedom" film, rather than a slavery film.) Equal parts reality and spirituality, the new film echoes Lemmons's remarkable debut feature Eve's Bayou (1997), with its voodoo vibe. Even more miraculous, Lemmons has managed to paint a portrait of a heroic historic figure, high on a pedestal, and yet make her achingly human. read more...
