Eccentricities of a Blonde-haired Girl (2009)
Currently active at age 101, the legendary Portuguese director Manoel de Oliveira ( I'm Going Home, A Talking Picture) continues to deliver wonderfully thoughtful, reflective movies at the rate of one a year, even if their distribution in America remains spotty. Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl is my ninth Oliveira, and it's perhaps the sleekest and simplest of all his films, which is not to say that it's a trifle. Even at a pleasant 64 minutes, it savors classical beauties, reaches tremendous depths and comes in with a satisfying bite. read more...

Tropical Malady (2005)
Up-and-coming Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul's new film Tropical Malady has caused as much hostility among the critical community as any film since Abbas Kiarostami's Taste of Cherry (1997). Some consider it a masterpiece, while others consider it an infuriating, condescending mess. Moviegoers are urged to ignore the latter group. read more...

Fallen Angels (1995)
Wong Kar-wai's most stylistically dense film (and my favorite), Fallen Angels, is said to be an unofficial sequel -- or at least a companion piece -- to Chungking Express, a third chapter for that film that didn't quite fit. It, too, follows a series of lost, sad characters who can't ever seem to relate. read more...
