The Truman Show (1998)

The Truman Show is more than a brilliant movie. It's a brilliant idea for a movie, written by Andrew Niccol, perfectly executed by its director, Peter Weir, and brilliantly acted by Jim Carrey. It should be a big hit this summer because it's easy to see just how good it is. Its theme -- to what degree will we eventually allow television to outpower us? -- is clear, poignant, and relevant. read more...

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

In Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels (1941), filmmaker John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) longs to make a serious movie. He's tired of making dumb comedies like Ants in Your Pants of 1939. He storms around his producer's office and whines, "I wanna make O Brother, Where Art Thou?" If we could transport John Sullivan (or indeed even Preston Sturges) from 1941 and sit them down to watch this new movie with the same title, I think he would be rather astonished. But for the rest of us, the Coen brothers have done it again. read more...

Good Morning (1959)

Good Morning was the first film I'd ever seen by the great Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu, who is perhaps better known for his powerful Tokyo Story (1953). As a comedy, Good Morning doesn't affect us in quite the same way as Ozu's great dramas, and, in fact, its reputation does not rank it with Ozu's more serious works. But as an introduction to Ozu, it's a perfect film. And, in addition, I think it has more to offer artistically than its reputation would suggest. read more...

Ed Wood (1994)

I've since seen Ed Wood about six times, and it's brilliant. Anyone else but Tim Burton probably would have made fun of Wood, the "worst filmmaker of all time," but the movie is instead a loving tribute to an artist who got at least six films made (the movie shows us three), despite lack of finance and lack of talent. Burton had enough clout to use Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski's original first draft of the script, with no rewrites or doctors, a rarity for a high profile Hollywood movie. The final product is tough, uncompromising, touching, gritty and funny. Bela Lugosi's drug problem is faced, which would probably have been cut out by Hollywood meddlers. read more...

Boy (2012)

Coming-of-age movies are quickly becoming the most tiresome of movie genres. There are two reasons for this: one is that it's a rare skill to be able to remember one's childhood with painful accuracy (not just nostalgia), and the second is that, when filmmakers do fail to remember their own childhood, they simply borrow from other coming-of-age movies. read more...
