The Last Emperor (1987)

I saw The Last Emperor the week it opened in 1987, and haven't seen it since. Now, 11 years later, the movie is being re-released, in a "director's cut," supervised by cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, with almost an hour of footage restored. The 11 years in-between viewings of The Last Emperor has dulled my memory, and I wasn't able, for the most part, to distinguish which scenes were new. read more...

Barry Lyndon (1975)

Seeing Barry Lyndon a second time, I found myself charmed by just how funny and lively it is, in an underplayed way, when it just seemed cold the first time around. I also appreciated O'Neal's banal portrayal of the title character, perfectly capturing the scoundrel's inner life. read more...

Presented in a three-disc edition from the Criterion Collection, it's a major title that ranks with Criterion's spectacular Brazil set. read more...

Hamlet (1948)

Despite the three other very good movie versions of William Shakespeare's Hamlet (1990, 1996, and 2000), many world scholars still associate the quintessential film version with Laurence Olivier's 1948 version. It's almost as if Olivier were being credited with writing the play himself. But, having seen all four versions recently, I've come to realize that it's a difficult prospect to choose the best one. Rather, each version has elements that are superior but none renders the others completely obsolete. read more...

The Last Laugh (1924)

F.W. Murnau's The Last Laugh stars the irrepressible Emil Jannings, at the time considered perhaps the finest of all screen actors. He plays an aging hotel doorman, dressed in an elegant head-to-toe uniform, complete with white gloves and dotted with shiny buttons. His uniform is a source of great pride as he walks to and from work each day; his neighbors fawn over him. One night, during a downpour, he is unable to lift a heavy chest and his boss transfers him to a downstairs washroom attendant job. Stripped of his uniform, he also loses his pride and dignity. (Jannings' body leans in a twisted, physical representation of shame; he's literally unable to stand up straight.) read more...
