Bad Grandpa (2013)

Unlike the episodic Jackass movies, the new Bad Grandpa -- with Jeff Tremaine at the helm, and with Spike Jonze as a co-writer/co-producer/all around cohort -- has a very loose plot upon which to hang its gross-outs and stunts. It requires the 86 year-old Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) to reluctantly drive his 8 year-old grandson Billy (Jackson Nicoll) from Nebraska to North Carolina, to live with his delinquent dad. Also, they are transporting the corpse of Irving's late wife in the trunk. read more...

Extract (2009)

Mike Judge packs a lot of jokes and very little movie into his new Extract. The movie has a kind of lazy, cruddy look -- which may or may not have been on purpose -- and the screenplay alternates between wanting a plot and wanting to just wallow in the latest laugh. An 11th hour character, a sleazy lawyer who advertises on park benches, could have livened up the party, but instead he falls flat. Jason Bateman stars Joel, a chemist who started his own food extract company and oversees production. Joel works too much and his sex life with his wife, Suzie (Kristen Wiig), is on the rocks. read more...

The Original Kings of Comedy (2000)

The Original Kings of Comedy marks Lee's second attempt at documentary filmmaking (his first was the unforgettable 4 Little Girls from 1997). This time, though, the subject matter offers laughs instead of tears. Covering the most successful touring comedy show of all time, Lee presents the Kings of Comedy: D.L. Hughley, Cedric the Entertainer, Bernie Mac, and emcee Steve Harvey, filmed over a two-day period in Charlotte, North Carolina. Lee shoots the film in a fluid style, giving plenty of coverage to the animated, appreciative audience (directly the opposite of Jonathan Demme's approach on "Stop Making Sense"). All four comics got me giggling, but Hughley was the only one who tickled me till I was out of breath. I can't really say why, though his line about taking a shower with his wife and standing freezing in the back hit home. The film offers more than just yuks, however. As in Lee's best work, the film intelligently discusses race and race relations, though this time through the guise of humor. read more...

The Ref (1994)

One of the earliest and most acid of Christmas black comedies, The Ref (1994) centers on jewel thief, Gus (Denis Leary), who, on Christmas Eve after a bungled robbery, has the misfortune to run into feuding couple Lloyd (Kevin Spacey) and Caroline Chasseur (Judy Davis). Holding them at gunpoint, Gus forces them to pretend he's a holiday guest to evade the cops. But their insane bickering, even in the face of mortal danger, as well as other bizarre events, adds a whole new level to Gus's simple crime wave. B.D. Wong co-stars as the ineffectual marriage counselor, with J.K. Simmons as a commander from the couple's son's military school. Ted Demme directs, and Marie Weiss and Richard LaGravenese co-wrote the screenplay. read more...

Friday After Next (2002)

In 1987, Run-DMC busted a rhyme with "Christmas in Hollis," one of the first visions of Christmas in the 'hood: "It's Christmastime in Hollis, Queens; Mom's cooking chicken and collard greens." Fifteen years later, writer/actor/rapper Ice Cube follows suit 15 with the first Christmas movie set in the 'hood. Friday After Next marks the third film in Cube's laid-back Friday series. And like National Lampoon's Vacation series, this film probably will become a new holiday favorite, even though it's not quite as funny as the first one. (Still, I'm already looking forward to seeing Friday After Next on video next Christmas.) read more...
