The Big Lebowski (1998)

Joel and Ethan Coen had perhaps their biggest task ahead of them, to follow up Fargo, the most popular and critically acclaimed movie of their career, which topped critics' lists and earned them an Oscar. Fortunately, the Coens did what they do best. They ignored it all and just made another great Coen brothers movie. read more...

Dazed and Confused (1993)

Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused not only portrays flawlessly a 24-hour period on the last day of school in 1976, but it captures the crushing boredom of a small town. The biggest event on this day is not so much the beginning of summer vacation or the promise of new and exiting things on the horizon, but hazing incoming freshmen, beating them up and humiliating them. This is the small town mentality, taking out the frustration of your own dim future on those younger than you who might still have a chance. read more...

Cabin Boy (1994)

This universally loathed flop may have the makings of a future cult classic, although at the moment it's more of a guilty pleasure; no one wants to admit that they like it, except me. I count myself as one of the movie's dozen or so fans. read more...

The Young Ones (1982)

This hilarious show came to the US via MTV in the early 80s, and introduced viewers to an entirely new level of laughter. Sharing a house, four poor, rude, stupid British college students -- punk Vyvyan (Adrian Edmondson), uptight Rick (Rik Mayall), hippie Neil (Nigel Planer), and leader Mike (Christopher Ryan) -- bicker with each other. Alexei Sayle is a frequent co-star. Occasionally a cool band -- like Madness or Motorhead -- comes to play. This essential box set contains an earlier version of the series, which aired on the BBC in 1982, and to my knowledge, never hit American airwaves. The three-disc box set (1982-84, BBC/Warners, $59.98) contains 12 episodes, featurettes and other extras. Look for Emma Thompson, Robbie Coltrane, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders in small roles. read more...

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)

In Preston Sturges' Sullivan's Travels (1941), filmmaker John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) longs to make a serious movie. He's tired of making dumb comedies like Ants in Your Pants of 1939. He storms around his producer's office and whines, "I wanna make O Brother, Where Art Thou?" If we could transport John Sullivan (or indeed even Preston Sturges) from 1941 and sit them down to watch this new movie with the same title, I think he would be rather astonished. But for the rest of us, the Coen brothers have done it again. read more...
