ThanksKilling (2009)

Sometimes there are good-bad movies, and sometimes there are movies that are just fun to watch because they're so bad, but Jordan Downey's ThanksKilling (2009) is designed to look and feel like a bad movie. On purpose. But whether that makes it a good movie, and worth watching, is up to your own personal tastes, and perhaps your holiday alcohol consumption. (The movie's tagline is "Gobble, Gobble, motherf----r!") Basically, there's a killer turkey (an obvious puppet, never seen in its entirely) that speaks with lots of four-letter words and kills people if they come too close to sacred Indian grounds. Or something. Four teens on the way home for Thanksgiving break anger the creature and spend the rest of the movie being hacked up into bloody pieces. A porn star called Wanda Lust appears a topless pilgrim in a prologue. It runs only 70 minutes and might be good for a giggle or two. Downey followed it up with ThanksKilling 3 (yes, there is no "Part 2"). read more...

A Bay of Blood (1971)

One of Mario Bava's best films is A Bay of Blood, also released as Twitch of the Death Nerve (1971). A predecessor to the slasher subgenre, it's said to have heavily influenced the Friday the 13th films. It begins with a vicious murder, then resumes as a group of frolicking young people arrive for some summer vacation time beside the lake, only to find themselves in danger with a mysterious killer on the loose. The plot has something to do with ownership of the valuable lakeside land, and you'll never guess who the killer really is. The film contains some of Bava's finest, and most naturalistic work as well as some innovative gore effects and a memorable lakeside striptease from Brigitte Skay. Claudine Auger, Luigi Pistilli and Laura Betti star. read more...

Undead (2003)

Though filmmakers never seem to run out of ideas for vampire movies, the new crop of zombie movies faintly smacks of desperation. Filmmakers have recently tried for faster zombies, updated backdrops and comedy angles, but no one has yet been able to touch the master, George A. Romero's brilliant quadrilogy (though Shaun of the Dead comes close). Peter and Michael Spierig's new Australian zombie movie, Undead, arrives on U.S. shores two years after its Australia opening and just a couple of weeks after Romero's latest masterpiece, Land of the Dead. Despite a few new ideas and a modicum of entertainment value, Undead ultimately seems irrelevant. read more...

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)

Seeing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre again recently has convinced me that it's quite a bit better than I initially judged. From the startling opening sequence with its popping flashbulbs to the jarring finale (mixing Marilyn Burns' blood-curdling screams with the sound of the chainsaw), it's an incredibly sturdy piece of work. read more...

Shivers (1975)

This early feature by David Cronenberg was the first of his films to delve into horror and to embrace his body-conscious themes that would permeate the rest of his work. (One of the alternate titles was the hauntingly appropriate They Came from Within.) read more...
